It's kind of unfortunate that they refer to TURNS; based on what is shown at around 7:00, to me 'number of turns' should be thought of as number of 'passes' through the 'window', rather than 'loops' or 'turns' around the frame of the window. One 'turn' around the frame of the window is actually considered 'two turns' as shown at 7:56.

Hello, Yes, you are right some how. But at different sites you will discover different answers of this question. Normally for current transformers, we considered the number of turns in a way it is explained in the video and for normal transformer we considered the number of turns in the way you have pointed out. Thank you, GeneralPAC by AllumiaX

question: if you have a VT of 13800/120 and CT of 800/1 with connected load of no more than 400A. Lets say you decided to install a meter to read your total consumption. how would the meter read the consumption? would it read it as 400/800= 0.5A then 0.5*120*cos()= 60W? and is there any difference if I change my ct to 400/1 since i only have a connected load of no more than 400A, Am I still going to get the same reading as when using 800/1 ct?

But doesn't this increase the voltage in the secondary circuit compared to primary circuit? In part 1 you told that the voltage is also decreased. My understanding is that, if number of turns is increased the voltage in the circuit will increase. (Mech engineer trying to understand some electrical topics, so please bear if it is a silly doubt)

why the CT star connection should face the protected object? If we make the star point of ct on the othet side then would relay still be able to protect the asset ? What is the real purpose of ct star point ? please elaborate

i have question if we have same source and same load but we have differnt trnasformer ratio like 400/1 and 400/5 so we have same secondry current
@Generalpac
@Generalpac 9 жыл бұрын
+yasser farouk -- a 400/1 turns ratio is different than 400/5 turns ratio. It's important to know the difference. 400/1 = 400 secondary turns and 1 primary turns. 400/5 = 400 secondary turns and 5 primary turns which is the same thing as 80/1 If you have 600A primary current - a 400/1 turns ratio would yield 1.5A secondary current (600/(400/1)). If you have 600A primary current - 400/5 turns ratio would yield 7.5A secondary current (600/(400/5)) Does that make sense?
@christianacena8530
@christianacena8530 8 жыл бұрын
no, not the same lets assume 200 amps load for both ct's. in 400/1 ct the secondary current is 200/400= 0.5 sec amp. since turns ratio is 400. while in 400/5 ct secondary current is 200/80= 2.5 sec amp. since turns ratio is 80.

Please also explain why we use these phase shifts in transformer like dyn11 etc ? what is basic purpose of doing that ? why we use wye and delta configuration of transformers ? what is advantage and disadvantage of both systems ? what is function of neutral in wye transformer and how it works ? why we take care it is grounded or not ? please explain completely thank you
@Generalpac
@Generalpac 8 жыл бұрын
+rana zohaib, that is loaded question and the answers will come easy if you put time and efforts to understand this subject. There are a lot of benefits for using a delta wye transformer. We can completely isolate ground protective relaying with delta connection. We can suppress harmonics with delta connection. We have good stability of voltage with grounded wye connection. We also assume that our system is a "grounded" system if we ground the neutral. So lots of benefits with both the delta connection and the wye grounded connection. There are many ways that we can make a delta connection and many different ways we can make a wye connection. The Dyn11 simply describes (through phase relationship) one way that we can make/connect a delta wye transformer.

In the window type current transformer, how does the primary conductor passing through, make it 'one turn'. It doesnt make any turns right!
@Generalpac
@Generalpac 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Yashwanth, In literal terms, the conductor passing through the window type CT does not have any 'turns'. However, the term 'turns' is extensively used in electrical engineering literature to refer to the number of times the current has to travel through a similarly shaped part of the circuit. See the image in the link below which shows a solenoid, where there are 6 'turns' --or say 'identical portions' of the circuit, so in a circuit where there are no turns, there will only be one 'identical portion' for the current to pass through. circuitdigest.com/sites/default/files/field/image/What-is-Solenoid.png The term 'turns' has been adopted for use in a number of equations, one of the most famous being the transformation ratio of a transformer. To maintain consistency with the existing literature, a single straight conductor is called as having 'one turn'.

Keep in mind, the main goal is lower current. A CT is a modified step up transformer but it is in series with the circuit that it’s reading. It has a very low impedance and therefore hardly a voltage drop.
