Great review. I love this app. I love the rich media capabilities. I've been using it since mid-2013, and have since uploaded prior journals to the platform that I kept on Microsoft Word and even WordStar back in the day, or that I have transcribed from older physical material. I have all my journals since I was a teenager in the late 1980s consolidated in Day One now. I sort of like the "on this day" feature because when you have that many years in one place you get some funny comparisons. Thanks for the review! Well done.

I'm just getting started with Day One and although this tutorial was very helpful, I wish there were one that would help me get started...taking things step by step. Any ideas of where to find one?

Great job as always. I use Dayone almost daily. My favorite feature is the Activity feed. Although I notice they recently changed the interface. I prefer the old one. I have an IFTTT integration with Evernote but for some strange reason, it doesn’t work. All in all, Dayone is a very powerful tool.

Where we differ is that I journal to remember significant days rather than to empty my head and forget. I have book journals and cheesy lockable diaries from my childhood and teen years back in the '80s and '90s. When I look back on entries, it takes me back to some pretty awesome memories and I can also see how far I've come or how much I've grown since. Even still, I don't think I'd find much use in an "on this day" flashback reminder, which is basically like Facebook memories. The only reason I'm considering a digitalized journal app is because I certainly type faster than I handwrite, and, these days, handwriting can get painful for me. There's a lot of guilt around that because I find so much value in a handwritten journal/diary because I'll look back on my entries more in book form than in digital form. Same goes for photos. We take soooo many pics and videos on our phones that we never ever revisit, even though it's obviously handy and available on our devices wherever and whenever. Makes me wonder why people don't soak in and appreciate a moment, or a concert, and focus on recording it instead, only to never watch it again...and then you lose out on a lot of natural memories that way. Huge chunks of your life are missing, not from drugs and alcohol abuse or brain damage, but from recording something being more important than being fully in the moment. I have one foot into technology and the other still in the practical and tangible. It's because I'm the last generation to really use "old fashioned" ways, but also the generation that developed the technologies we take for granted today. I understand that the digital world is fragile and unreliable, but so darn convenient....until there's a power grid failure for days, weeks or months (which will happen)....or a huge accidental cloud server dump....or a hardware failure...or a hacker attack. If we go headlong into trusting technology, we also need to know how to access our data/information when we're offline, or when we don't have on-the-grid power options. I think that could be a massively important message you could teach on your channel. Anyway, as you can see, I'm more than ready to start journaling online because I can certainly type out a novel. Keep up the great app reviews. I don't think "Day One" is for me. I'm leaning more toward "Journey" or the like because of the layout/format and cross-platform use. I'm a Chromebook/Windows/Android user.

You certainly do type a novel 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 And I completely agree with everything you said about recording versus living moments. Unfortunately, because I too treasure natural moments... I suck at vlogging 🤣 even though a lot of people would like me to start that. I think we definitely need a balance between the conveniences that come with technology and savouring life and we live it more than record it 🤣 Nice tip on the beautiful memories 🤣 I always felt like I was cheating journaling only happy moments. Then I just rant about all the bad stuff I want to forget, and when I start, there is no stopping me... kkkk

Thanks Ropsie! By the way, can you add web links in an entry? This is where Notability kind of fails, so I would be interested in testing this app for a while..

How do you just do a regular journal entry with lines and you can physically write in it on a page? I've looked around for an hour and can't figure it out.... I need lines lol

Not sure if anyone has commented about this as I'm too lazy to read the comments, but transcribing is useful for quickly seeing what's in the audio without taking the time to listen to it. People also use transcription in journals so they can search their spoken notes since audio can't be searched otherwise (as far as I know).

Nice review. I like h5 formatting. 5 hashtags. Really good. But not visible in their formatting tools lol I agree with you regarding h3 red color. It doesn't sound like a heading! Very weird color. This app is amazing though. Its strengths are end-to-end encryption and multiple journals. But unfortunately i'm gonna cancel my subscription because of lack of support for android (basically abandoned app) and no app for Windows/linux :( Their web extensions no longer work. It is a painful experience for those who are not fully into Apple ecosystem. I am yet to find an alternative app that is cross-platform and offers end-to-end encryption & multiple journals.

You would want to transcribe from audio because you may not want to listen to a longer audio file and would prefer to scroll to the section of interest
