Excellent video, I've used other DY multiband compressors, but MB is the best. It's also probably the greatest plugin Fab Filters have come out with. Concerning EQ, never seen such fluid movement and is like a 3 in 1.

Compression (in the case of downward compression which is most common) reduces dynamic range by decreasing the volume of anything above a certain threshold. Downward expansion increases dynamic range by reducing the volume of anything below a certain threshold. There's also upward compression, which increases the volume of anything below the threshold, and upward expansion, which increases the volume of anything above the threshold. This plugin can do all four from the looks of it.

Even the greatest mixing engineers still have to mix a poorly written song every now and again, and this is not one of those songs, whether it's your cup of tea or not.

When the frequency drops below the threshold, volume is reduced. This expands the dynamic range by making the lowest volumes lower. Upward expansion is what you said, it expands dynamic range by making the loudest volumes louder.

Side chaining a single band using the free mode and slider handles is an excellent way of handling an otherwise tricky step with a single click and drag. Bravo Fab! I assume this be in the Mastering bundle? If so, is this an extra cost for current master bundle owners?

can someone explain "downward expansion"? so does this mean when the frequency drops BELOW the threshhold, they are expanded (volume increased)? SO therefore uppward expansion would be the opposite? when the frequency goes above a certain threshhold they are increased?

@DanWorrall The Pro-MB manual says that in minimum phase, "the phase effects will become very apparent and often unpleasant, which makes this method virtually unusable for mastering purposes". I'm confused because 1. I thought the human ears could not hear phase shift as long as they are constant and 2. when mastering you process the while mix which cannot lead to the filtering that phase differences can cause when processing correlated tracks. I would highly appreciate if you could tell me what I'm missing here. Thank you very much!

Nice plugin! I have a stereo mix consisting of male vocal (somewhat centered) and acoustic guitar (somewhat wide but slightly buried). Can mid side EQ be adjusted to help accentuate the guitar and give it more clarity and sparkle without raising the sibilance of the voice? How might this be accomplished with Pro-MB? Thanks. So, is the typical fabfilter modulation matrix available? If so, is it possible to get the compressor to 'pump' via a clock (1/4 note, 1/8 note, etc.) instead of a sidechain. The Vengeance Multi-band sidechain does this, and was thinking about purchasing that, but maybe this is a better option...

FabFilter Pro-MB Hi. I'm very new to the mixing world and there is something with compression that I don't get. When I apply extreme compression(lowest threshold + range/infinite ration/low attack/low release) to a sound on pro MB, the moment I use the ''Band Level'' gain ( which looks like a ''make-up'' gain) and level the sound back to where it was before the compression, I hear near no difference between the compressed sound and the uncompressed sound. So it makes me feel like the actual compressor doesn't compress...

I think the majority of the dynamic control is probably coming from clip gain automation.

I know this is an old thread, but parts of his processing chain have been shown in other videos. He uses Pro-G to tame BG noise in the vocal, EQ's with Pro-Q, and compresses with Pro-C. He also sidechains the vocal track to the BG music with Pro-C with a very low threshold, low compression range, high lookahead, and a long release, so the music automatically ducks while he's talking.
