Just got fitted yesterday with new hearing aids. It’s been a long time, it turned out, since I had heard a full range of frequencies. Had forgotten how nice my modest 5.1 audio system sounded. I am enjoying your videos both before and after the new aids. Maybe not so relevant to your channel, but might encourage someone to get a test, or a retest. These aids were not so expensive and have a lot of automatic adjustment for changing conditions. Sound is important for all of us and loss can be gradual so we don’t realize our deficit.

Never before this was explained more accurate. I wash had these words at hand when I was running around as a child with my cassette recorder to record „the living room“, „school“ or whatever. But even now most people wouldn’t get it. Photography or Videography is for everybody, the magic of Phonography that evokes an absolutely special kind of immersion seems not to work for too many people.

Happy to see the beginning of this series... primarily a photographer/videographer but a recent trip that included a small foray into field recording so emphasized the importance of good sound in telling a better story that I took a swan dive into the field recording rabbit hole. That’s great! Do you mean the Zoom H5? Either way, it’s so exciting, isn’t it? I think so. Congrats on your new purchase! I have an H5 and it got me really hooked on recording sounds. You can start with just the XY attachment and see how that goes. If you have the H5, you’ll also have a couple more spots to plug in any mics. I’d go for a pair of Clippy mics to go with that, if it were me. Is that what you were asking?

Very interesting, and nicely presented. I have been sliding into this hobby and definitely need some guidance. I use F3 with a pair of home made condenser mics. I just love getting up early and heading out to capture some time. Hope you will continue this series and will address things like traffic noise, placement for stereo and how to get the most out of less expensive gear. So many channels just recommend top gear, it's a bit pointless for beginners.

@TheRecordist
@TheRecordist Жыл бұрын
Haha. Thanks! Well the F1 and F2 have very noisy pip preamps. Very similar to the original H series. If you’re looking for a plugin powered recorder, the H1n is a lot better. It’s not that they’re terrible per se, but the concept of the Zoom F-series is to be professional level recorders (and that’s true of all the other F-series recorders) but the F1 and F2 don’t share that quality by comparison. Hope this helps!

1:18 in I'm praying there'll be equipment featured I can actually afford (none so far). Love the metal theme song opening. Actually impressed with your jokey field recording snippet with an SM58 w/ no wind protection...Have been looking at parabolic dish mics to get good (more) isolated bird sounds. Any recommendations? Btw, about 2 hrs ago I watched a content creator who was suggesting two mics (not parabolic) he used to get audio of loons on a lake combined with the video of said loons and it was fantastic. He used very inexpensive shotgun mics attached to his camera. He also showed audio/video of bull moose antler fighting and moose calls. So good.
@TheRecordist
@TheRecordist 10 ай бұрын
Hey thanks! Hmm. For great quality sound, I wouldn’t use a parabolic dish system. They tend to lose a lot of natural low end. I’m curious, do you have a link for that content creator who used two mics?
@dag221
@dag221 Жыл бұрын
I'm still amazed how know one seems to know or care that Sony replaced the D100 with the PCM-D10 and it has two xlr inputs and built in mics. I wasn't going to spend $1,000 to buy a used D100 so I bought a new D10 for $500 and it's has the equivalent quality mics and preamps as the D100 but with the added feature of xlr inputs. The D10 is the most used recorder in my bag despite also owning a Mix-Pre 3 and a Zoom F3. I can also recommend the Immersive Soundscape Earsight Nano microphones. They are similar in design and specs to the LOM Micro Usi but aren't quite as hot/sensitive. The Line Audio CM4 are a good value for a pair of cardioid condenser microphones and I use mine quite often. Good info and an informative video. I look forward to seeing more of them.
@TheRecordist

Hey thanks very much! I know about the D-10 but don’t talk about it as much. While I have never personally tested the D-10, some recordist friends of mine agree that it’s noisier than the D-100 and lower quality (but much better battery life). Here’s a recordist I follow. This is his long-term review: mindful-audio.com/blog/sony-pcm-d10-handheld-recorder-review Thanks for watching! @TheRecordist
@TheRecordist 4 ай бұрын
Hey. Well, the F2 - while seeming to be in the Zoom F class of recorders - is actually an H class recorder. So, the F3 has the really nice preamps, as does the F6, F8n, etc. the F2 has preamps like the H series (H1n, H5, H6, etc). So, noisier preamps.

In 2011 I was recording sound for a 45 minute short film (that I also Directed, DP'd, lit, and edited, while supervising sound) on a Panasonic Super VHS Reporter video camera while shooting video on a Canon camcorder. A year or two after that I got a Zoom H4n recorder. It was awesome until I misplaced it, and replaced it with an H4n Pro, with the better preamps, the same preamps used in the H5 and H6 as well. I got my Pro used and saved money. The whole time I recorded on all these I was using an Azden SGM-1X shotgun mic. In a club comparison among 5 other mics, including $450 mics, mine was chosen as the best full-bodied sounding mic of all 6. I got another mic exactly like it but it did not sound quite as good. Last year I upgraded to a Zoom F4 and an Azden SGM-3500-L, which has a number of identical or negligibly different spec's compared to an MKH-416, but the mic is half the price of the Sennheiser, and even less when buying used, in mint condition. This combination sounds phenomenal. I use it for narrative stuff. I'm going to get an Oktava mk-012 for indoor dialogue, but I have other purchases that have higher priority first. As I am retiring in November, I am looking to creating my own libraries of field recordings and making them available for purchase. Have fun and make some money too? That is my retirement plan. I've already been getting paid work for doing lighting, and some of it has been for more money per day than I currently make at my skilled trades job I am retiring from. I would do this for free, because I love the creative outlet so much, but if it makes them happy to pay me, who am I to spoil their fun? REALLY looking forward to this series. Thank you for taking the time to create it. And sorry for the novel.

Oh how I wish more content creators would take the time to watch videos like yours. The general state of sound on internet videos is horrible. End comment.

Oh. Haha. Thank you so much! I do agree. A lot of video guys don’t spend the time to properly learn audio. There are many exceptions though.

Hello, I want to start field recording. I watched your videos! Great guide! And there are some details that confuse me! I would be very happy if you could help. First of all, I would like to talk about the equipment I am stuck with! The reason I'm stuck between these is the budget situation! 1. Equipment Zoom H6 Wsu-1 Deadcat 2. Equipment Zoom F3 Rode M5 (Stereo Recording) Rycote Bbg Wind Protection I'm so undecided between these two devices! Zoom F3 is a very good device! But since I am a beginner, should I install such equipment at first? Or should I start with Equipment 1, the Zoom H6? Which would be more suitable for me! Considering the price between the two pieces of equipment, which would be more suitable for a beginner? I can say that I took my first step into this business by recording ocean waves and rain videos with my phone and recording the sounds with my phone! And I want to move towards professionalism in this field. First of all, I want to create videos on KZbin, such as wave sounds and rain sounds! I even have videos that I have made and continue to make! Which would be the best choice for me in this regard? I'm waiting for your help! ** Since English is not my native language, I prepared this text using Google Translate! I hope I was able to explain my request!

Hello. I will try to help you here. I am not sure if you already have both options or you are trying to pick the right package to purchase. If it were me, I would choose the F3 with the two M5 mics and the BBG. The F3 is a far better recorder with better preamps. Much better than the H6. I realize it only has two inputs, and the H6 has six, but how often are you going to use more than two inputs? But if you haven’t already bought any of that, I would choose the Clippy or Pluggy XLR Omni microphones instead of the M5 mics: micbooster.com/clippy-and-pluggy-microphones/99-xlr-stereo-clippy-em272-microphone.html They’re cheaper and better. But if you already have a pair of M5 mics then they will do just fine. Hope this helps!

@@TheRecordistThank you also for getting back so quickly. I haven't made any purchases yet! I'll buy the microphones you recommended! 😊 And I live in Turkey! I hope I can bring these microphones you mentioned to Turkey 😊😄

@@ahmetcanaltintas I hope it’ll be no problem. Nick from www.micbooster.com ships all over the world. Let him know I sent you. The Recordist (Nathan) from The Time Preservation Society. Tell him what you’re doing and he will help you out! He also has custom BBG for the Clippy and Pluggy mics. I always wanted to try Turkish Coffee! Cheers from Canada!

@@TheRecordist I just sent an email! And I'm waiting for an answer. I told them you were guiding them. I hope I can bring the microphone and wind protection to my country smoothly and affordably. In the worst case scenario, I will buy Rode M5s from Turkey :) Also, I'm wondering about one more thing. Are shotgun microphones suitable for this type of recording? Because as far as I know, recordings made with a shotgun will produce mono sound! Shotgun (mono) microphone or stereo recording microphone setups for recording ocean wave sounds and rain sounds? Which one is more suitable?

@@ahmetcanaltintas for ocean and waves, shotgun is not good. Better to go with either two Omni mics in stereo, or two cardioid mics in stereo (like the M5). Shotguns are not meant to be paired. It can be done of course, but I don’t think the results would be as good as the other ones. I hope Nick gets back to you fast! Do let me know!
