I had a look at the livelooping site very briefly while listening to this video. Gone are the days of analog tape, and reel-to-reel decks… still it makes me wonder if this couldn’t be emulated in Ableton with the tape delay plugins. Very interesting video! No worries on the audio quality, its the information in the video that is important =)

There are numerous ways to emulate the tape based Frippertronics, using one of the many plugins or stompboxes

Explaining Frippertronics, has on a Mahavishnu t-shirt, uses a Roland GR 500/700 controller for his guitar AND has the GR 500 to go with it. Yep, sounds about right. He just needed a EH Big Muff Pi for his solo sound and it would have been perfect. I remember doing low budget looping in my bedroom with a Digitech two minute digital delay, back in the 80s. I did a ton of extemporaneous looping and ambient performances, for myself. I never developed it because I figured no one would be interested. Now look what it has turned into. I have a Line 6 DL MKII and two TC Flashback 4X. I really should just pick up where I left off.

Thx and I totally agree about the headset mic (read that before you deleted that) - this was just a demo for a tiny live audience, I didn't expect it would be any popular on KZbin :)

btw it is a GR300 synth and a G202 guitar :). I own a Big Muff but I found it too noisy

Finally found the one to explain it in simple terms. I don't need to know the maths behind it. I've tried other demos but this is the one for me

the initial fripp/eno set up involved eno adjusting the sample/delay, later a one-man setup was used for Fripps solo performances

Thanks veloopity for sharing this video. I loved to listen to Fripp's Dark Star back in the late 70's. Always wondered how it looked like on the reels. This video is very similar. And thanks ofr the electronic info about elotronix.

so nice. the possibilities of sound on sound continue to haunt and amaze (ambient / generative / process / experimental) musicians even a half-century past Frippertronics. But I'd also argue it goes back MUCH further than that - to perhaps the concept of "canon" and rounds. After all, how far of a stretch is it (structurally) from a children's round song to an Eno-esque sound-on-sound composition?
@veloopity2 жыл бұрын
I agree. Here is something along these lines I wrote decades ago, and of course it is far from complete www.livelooping.org/history_concepts/theory/the-birth-of-loop/

What type of guitar is that? The headstock and body shape look somewhat similar to a strat, but different in a very cool way. Sounds fantastic! Thanks for the the great information!

It seems to me that if we could figure out which theatre Riley was performing at back then, and the theatre had records, we could figure out who the engineer was.

They don't have to be Revox machines. They should have stable and close to identical capstan speeds, or the tape can get damaged. There are a few companies selling expensive custom decks. But eBay does have some great deals on well maintained decks for a few hundred dollars. Ultimately, I think it's much easier to do with a computer - but not nearly as fun to watch.

thanks! ...so why does the "old" layers get more and more silent? I didn't get that, but it seems to be the main point

I think the rate at which it fades is dependent on the output level of the second tape deck. The output of the second tape deck is fed to a mono input on the first deck, which records it back onto the tape. If the output level on the second deck is low it will fade out quickly, whereas if the output level is high it will last quite a long time. I suspect that if it's turned up enough, the loops would just get louder until it was nothing but feedback.

Search for "elotronix" - free vst plugin (of course, if you have ASIO sound card) - that thing emulates every feature of "Frippertronicks" (of course except synthesizer sound).

@aliensporebomb9 жыл бұрын
The old GR-300 guitar synthesizer is modeled in software in several Roland/Boss products: the VG-99 (you can run two at once with this!), GR-55 and Boss GP-10. You will need a GK3 hexaphonic divided pickup but yes you can get that type of sound.
