The talk at the Royal in Toronto was the first of the evenings with Robert Fripp and David Singleton. Unlike subsequent evenings, following introductions, they played and discussed various archival recordings before launching into the Q&A - a pattern similar to an expanded Royal Package, for those familiar with the talks that preceded King Crimson concerts. Here they discuss the recently released Frippertronics performances from Washington Square Church in New York, July 27th - August 2nd 1981. #robertfripp

Saw his Frippertronics show at the Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco (1979?). He took a break to go to the bar, leaving the tape loop going. I wanted to meet him, so I headed him off on his way back from the bar. "Mr. Fripp, I'd like to shake your hand." He had a drink in either hand. "I'm afraid my hands are full. How about if I blow you a kiss?" Which he did. Had trouble convincing my friends that he did.

Although I really love Fripp's soundscapes, the simple, organic nature of frippertronics has an otherworldly quality that is unique and mesmerising. I am so glad we are getting to hear them preserved.

I hope Frippertronics is the first thing alien life hears from us.

Fast forward several years and now we have digital delays and looper pedals but I'm hard pressed to imagine how many layers of sounds are lying in the belly of those tape loops.

Fripptronics changed my life upon hearing them for the firs time around 1982, on the records which were available at the time, which I still have to this day. This music was so new, and very exciting... and even today, continues to blow my mind. Thankfully, so much is now being released that I never got to chance to hear until now, and for that I am eternally thankful and grateful to Robert, David, and all at DGM.

I enjoyed reading story of bringing these pieces together in the Washington Square liner notes. Now hearing David's retelling, it deepened the appreciation of the work and dedication that goes into making these archival recordings available to us. Many thanks to Robert, David, and Alex.

Frippertonics - my favourite. The most beautiful music I've heard. I have purchased many live recordings from DGM and play them frequently.

I had the great privilege of attending a Frippertronics concert. Pretty sure it was ’79 at Madam Wongs in LA. I’m very glad they were able to salvage a few examples of what was played - hearing them brought back memories that had been lost. I saw a previous comment of wanting to shake Robert’s hand. That was my goal after the concert, and it did happen for me. I was sitting extremely close to him as he played and as soon as he finished, I came over to shake his hand and he readily complied. I remember telling my good friend later how his hand felt like a mechanics or boxers… extremely meaty and muscular.

"If I feel something is the case, it probably is the case". It took me until around age 50 to finally begin to trust those "feelings" because by then they were based on years of experience. It began in my professional life and gradually spread to my personal life.

This story of the Frippertronics was told to some of the VIP meet-ups during the 2021 US tour, including Washington DC's Anthem. I don't tire of hearing it, of course. :)

He didn't invent that. I ran 10" reel tape from a TEAC 3340S to a Revox A77, with delay a factor of the distance between the decks. Played an Arp Odyssey and Farfisa for loop experiments, which didn't have a name.

As I understand it, Robert Fripp and Brian Eno developed “Frippertronics” , circa September 1972, using two modified Revox A-77 1/4” tape recorders. This was inspired by a system previously developed by Terry Riley and Pauline Oliveros. The results (featuring the unmistakably individual sound of Mr Fripp on his fuzz-toned Les Paul) were first heard on ‘side one’ of their collaborative instrumental album “No Pussyfooting”, released late 1973.
