Welcome to the BMW 1M family Matt. I have had mine almost 5 years (my car appears in Doug Demuro's video). As you know I have owned about 100 cars and many BMW M cars including the M2, Z3M Coupe, E46 M3, E90 M3, etc. and the 1M is my favorite. I could never sell it. Congrats and Enjoy !

matt where the cdv valve there should be enough slack in the line where u can join the pipe back together so u dont have to drill out the cdv valve just remove it

Nicky English i did the same in my BMW, and the clutch feel is much better!!! I’ve totally removed the valve and no problems whatsoever!!! 😉👍

hey Matt I've got an n54 and im catless as well. look into a custom single 3inch exhaust for the car WITH a resonator, completely straight pipe I agree they sound a bit annoying, but look into a 3in resonated single exhaust you will not be disappointed. if you have any questions about the n54 hmu! Also when yo redline the car I think the car cuts boost between shifts, this can be tuned out. also a custom tune/dyno tune really brings these engines to life, not saying that cob is not good, but an off the shelf tune does not come close to a custom one for you car.

Also, don't bother with drilling out the CDV. It has male threads on one end, female threads on the other, so you can just remove it and plumb the lines back together.

Yup. The CDV is just a piece that fits in between the slave cylinder and the hydraulic line. Just pop it out, reconnect the two remaining pieces, pressure bleed and you're done.

Hey Matt I forgot to suggest to you in relation to the Brakes, I agree they are good and M3 parts so I would keep them. However there are 2 easy upgrades you can do I did this to my previous e46 M3. Firstly add Braided brake lines - Presuming it does not already have them Secondly you can get these Brass bake guides - I got mine from Turners, they replace the rubber guides in sliding head calipers and make the braking action much smoother and straightens out the way the caliber grip the rotors so you get a multi piston type feel when you brake and much better life from your rotors as the wear is across the full face of the caliber. I never changed my rotors in 70Ks as they were in great condition. I also drove that car hard. Jp

The m3 brakes are great until you take the car on the track and they overheat about halfway in to a lapping session. There are kits for upgrading to F80 M3 brakes which eliminate heat soak. (Available at seems legit garage). A must-upgrade if you take the car on track. If you don't this suggestion and stock calipers/rotors are great.

N54 makes jobs of torque Matt. I have a full bolt 335i and have ran the car many times at the drag strip and even with drag radials you gotta be on your toes! I shift my car at 6300 no reason to run it up to 7500. I would look into MHD over Cobb. They have MANY new features for the N54 compared to Cobb. AWESOME!

Also you noticed the rear end uneasyness I mentioned yesterday. Here is how I fixed it : 1:solid rear subframe bushes. 2:aftermarket ball-jointed toe arm 3:lsd 4: m3 control arm My issue was 70% resolved with just 1+2 and 95% with 1+2+3

Yes that was in reference to those components being shot(except the first two). Added note: I’ve converted my rear to complete aftermarket ball jointed rear and it feels so planted , very go karty.

solid rear is a horrible idea for a street car all 1 series are uneasy under WOT with the n54

Ive had mine for 5 years now, used to daily it with solid subframe mounts. Noise/vibration increases marginally of course, but still nothing compared to my lotus, the performance gains overpower the noise gained. But really , if Matt doesn’t daily it - which I doubt he will, it is great. If not you can always go polyurethane.

The torque from the n54 is very addicting !! To this day a rwd N54 car is one of the funniest cars I’ve driven. And yes you are gonna go threw lots of rear tires haha. These cars are pretty useless in 3rd gear lol. Wait till you upgrade power your gonna really fall in love!

CDV delete is really easy. Recommend deleting that. Trunk looks great but I think the fitment needs adjustment and it'll be perfect! Love the 1m btw. Excellent pickup! 👏

Hey Matt, congrats on the 1M and welcome to the dark side of N54(it’s a slippery slope for tuners hehe). Few pointers to get you started in the right direction on N54: first get it custom tuned via MHD!! Either Protuning Freaks or Wedgetune. You won’t be sorry to ditch the outdated Cobb tune that’s not supported anymore. It’s night and day difference in power and features. Most importantly, just like the BMW performance seats, so is the bmw performance exhaust. It’s the only one that’s not boomy and without any unwanted low frequencies. It is raspy though but just like any other exhaust with downpipes. It’s a very musical exhaust and adds very nice exotic note to the N54. Also, prepare to upgrade the clutch for custom tuned e85 madness. At that point you’ll start craving to go hybrid or single turbo madness. That torque is very very addicting. Btw, you get timing pull when you have traction enabled, so keep it off to get full advantage of cars performance. Then upgrade tires. lol

Those look like Oakley glasses. I love Oakley lenses. But, because of my face’s shape, their prescription line fits poorly. I look at the sun/commercial line. I’ve found ordering custom, more wrapped, clear, prescription glasses to work really well.

The stock turbos run out of breath at 6k RPM... That's why it seems to "fall on it's face" , you should consider Pure stage II turbos. You can take that power all the way out to redline, and reliably.

Matt, I’ve owned an e92 M3 like yours and also own a 335i with the n54. I enjoy the look of the 1M, but there is nothing more enjoyable than that S65 in the M3; the fact that the n54 is extremely torquey and able to be modded easily just doesn’t appeal to me. I am curious to see whether you end up feeling the same with time.

Saw this car at PSI in Orlando. Get rid of COBB and get MHD its most popular in the n54 world as i have it myself for my 135i. They released a shift bog fix that will help you with the clutch problem! Anyways enjoy that rare gem and keep that csl trunk it looks sick!

Love the 1M. Personally I'd get rid of the M colours on the grill, loose the boot lid/trunk (looks odd and doesn't seem to fit properly) wheels I don't personly like also the blow off valve. Think maybe it would sound better with the standard cats in place. Love the car though would love one

Great car. I had that same HKS blow off valve on my Impreza back in 2002. Not sure it suits a BMW but I guess it goes with the rest of the mods ok. An old colleague had a stock 1M same colour as yours and added the M Performance seats. He noticed the orange stitching wasn’t the same as in the rest of the interior so he had a guy unpick the seats and restitch using thread he managed to source from BMW. Keep up the great videos. I think the exhaust sounds dialed in. It's hard to make those turbo sixes sound decent without a little rattle and buzz. Some Akro carbon tips would look nice. The wheels and rub are gross, but the M3 wheels in black will be sick.

Look into nelson racing steering wheels. He does amazing work and can do pretty much anything youd like. Also look into MHD as far as a code reader and more for tuning purposes

Congrats on the 1M! I have a single turbo N54 135i, but have always lusted at the 1M so excited to see some very relatable content in the near future with this one. I'm interested to hear what your midpipe setup is on the car currently. If there aren't any resonators involved, that's the cause of the noise you dislike when cold. Throw a resonated midpipe and I bet the sound clears up a bit. Catless downpipes, a resonated midpipe, and the Akra rear section should be damn near perfect sound wise. Definitely get rid of the CDV, change trans fluid, grab some Rogue Engineering trans mounts (which don't add any NVH) and install a BMW performance short shift kit if you can still find one. The finishing touch that I found was the Ultimate Clutch Pedal. Fully adjustable and took every bit of slop out of the plastic stock pedal. Last bit I'll add. Ditch the Cobb tune software asap. No one in the N54 world uses them anymore. Email Terry over at BMS and let him get you set up with a JB4 + MHD. You'll pick up more power and do it safer.

yea, this car looks AWESOME with ZCP rims, I think phat-ass models like the 1M and E90 (sedan) M3 looks amazing with ZCP staggered setup with some 255/275 tires, or even upto 295 for some ppl. I think E92's "sharper", "smoother" line works better with some HRE and BBS. Cars that went thru your garage were ALL amazing cars, from your old E92, C2S to GT3, S2K, F80, GT350 to GT3 RS. This car certainly is a special one for sure, limited production, high value, unique, relatively good sounding + punchy engine. But seeing your taste for yrs (lol), I don't think this car will last long, in the end it's just a good looking, small packaged tuned N54, or rather a tuned 135i. And I agree with your previous mentioning about trying it out for a while and do a "give-away" deal just think about it... If I were you, on a nice sunny day, I'm takin my S65 screaming NA + 6MT every single time, and I'm takin the RS on special occasions and car meets. the S65 was truly a pinnacle of M division motor, and the chassis is surprisingly capable. Who would have thought that a Team schirmer (Nurburgring BMW turning shop)'s E92 M3, with just 4.4 stroker motor NA, BBS E88 with sticky tires, custom suspension work, Akra exhaust, AP brakes, keeping all OEM body panels + some interior weight reduction would run a 6:59 at the Ring...that's 6 seconds faster than a 991.2 GT3 RS, and 10 sec faster than a Mercedes AMG GTR and Nismo GTR, and just 2 sec behind Porsche 918 Spyder...

You should really keep this one, its value is going up a lot then when new, it cost way more than an M2. I would keep that trunk and those wheels.
