Mushrooms are some of the most fascinating organisms on the planet. But what are they exactly? Are they plants? No! In fact, they are extremely different from plants. They belong in their own kingdom, called the Fungi kingdom. What else is in there? Yeasts, molds, some other interesting things. But mushrooms are the most fascinating members, and there are a lot of them. What is their structure? How do they grow? How do they reproduce? What can we do with fungi? The study of these incredible organisms is called mycology, let's learn about it together!

I've been falling in love with fungi ever since adopting them as an online theme, and this series on mycology is only enriching it. Having a name for the phenomena of mushroom blindness tickles me in particular, that it wasn't just me noticing them with greater frequency. You're a gem, Dave

I am very excited to see what you do with this series, and glad to hear you encouraging folks to study mycology, and that you’re interested in it as well. I’m currently back in school majoring in biochemistry intending on specializing in mycology after I graduate and move on to grad school/PhD. As well, I currently work as an accountant for a conventional environmental remediation company, and am hoping to make some of the science of mycoremediation more practical from the business perspective.

I've been picking mushrooms for as long as I can remember. Mostly cantharellus tubaeformis (latin name since I don't know what they're commonly called in English) and porcini (also chanterelles too but I rarely find them). A while ago I tried to expand my mushroom list by adding in some orange birch boletes. I didn't know that I have to cook them longer than normally because they can cause nausea. I vomited a lot the next night. Now I'm ready and excited to expand my mushroom list again. This time I'll do a lot more research about the mushrooms I pick before eating them. Just hoping for the snow to melt soon so I can journey to the forest.

YAAAAAAY! I wasn't sure if you'd hit on this, because so many science vids just lump it into a single chapter of "plants", and ... JUST YAAAAAY! MYCOLOGY!!!! *swoon* dang it, I do have one question I proposed a couple of years ago, that I never really got a great answer for. But can you think of any evolutionary pressure why some mushrooms evolved psilocybin? Is it along the lines of other fungi, who hijack insect brains? Is there a biochemical mechanic that would suggest it'd be effective for a particular reason, against certain insects?
