Operating System is a program that acts as an interface between the user of a computer and the computer hardware. An operating system is a system software that manages the computer hardware. The purpose of an operating system is to provide an environment in which a user can execute the programs in convenient and efficient manner. Operating system goals:---- -------------------------------------- Execute user programs and make solving user problems easier Make the computer system convenient to use Use the computer hardware in an efficient manners Depends on the user point of view:------- --------------------------------------------------------- For PC’s Users want convenience, ease of use and good performance Don’t care about resource utilization But shared computer such as mainframes, os is designed to maximize resource utilization of hardware. Users of dedicate systems such as workstations frequently use shared resources from servers. Handheld computers are resource(power, speed) poor, os is designed for usability and battery life. Depends on the system point of view:----------------------- ---------------------------------------------- OS is a resource allocator Manages all resources Decides between conflicting requests for efficient and fair resource use OS is a control program Controls execution of programs to prevent errors and improper use of the computer

It's not about repairing the hardware components. It's about with os we can use hardware components like printer, scanner etc efficiently. Without os u can't take print out . With out os u can't use mouse etc
