What you are actually paying for when you go to college is examination. Someone needs to oversee your level of learning, grade it, and give an official evaluation of your level so that others know how much you really know, e.g. when they want to give you a job. Those examiners are high level professionals and that's what costs so much really. Although maybe tuition cost could be halved if you learned by yourself and only payed for exams, that I agree on.

I think Universities should only take exams, because nowdays, you can learn everything on the internet University professors, 90% of them such at teaching. Every C++, Java, Python, or any other language i needed to learn, i used lots of KZbin, and online discussion posts to learn and books never helped, because most of the Authors who write books on these languages are assholes and expect you to already know how to operate these languages KZbin is the best source of knowledge i also pay thousands of dollars in tuition and get the shittiest professors in the Universe, there is literally no point of even having a University it's just so Companies and Employers can check if you actually know your stuff in ancient times, University was actually a place to share knowledge, and learn new things, nowadays its nothing more than a place to waste your money on shitty professors so an employer can probably hire you and know you actually went to college We need Education, not University Education

Thank you for this video. I've been trying to get to grips with pointers for ages and couldn't grasp it. I loved the way you presented the idea using a visual aid. Everything just came together and I finally understood the connections between the pointers and reference operator. I finally understand what dereferencing is now as well. Thank you sir!

Thank you!!! The book I was studying puts the * to the left of p instead of to the right of int, which is sooooo counter-intuitive. I wouldn't have known that you can write it as "*int* p" if I hadn't watched this video. You're an excellent teacher.

@lludmill The next video will be on pointers and dynamic memory. In that video I will discuss dangling references, garbage, value semantics in C++ (copy constructor, overloaded assignment) and the destructor. I plan to have several more pointer videos - passing pointers, function pointers, smart pointers etc. I've been busy with work and a few other projects... I will try to make the next video within the next month. Many more coming summer '12. Thanks for the suggestion on doing a C++11 video!

Earlier I was wondering why I could not print out the address and it turns out I was missing a *. So I decided to set it to auto instead of int (because I forgot to set it as int* instead of int) and it worked just fine. C++ does a good job of finding what I was looking for when I set it to auto.

Question: I do assign &var (7) to a *voidptr (void pointer). I do cast the void pointer to int pointer. Afterwards, I do print out *voidptr (gives me address of the variable) and **voidptr (gives me value of the variable). Why does not *voidptr dereference give me the value (7), but the address?
