So I've wanted to make this video for a really long time. I really enjoy watching speedruns, and I hope this video provides some insight into a part of the Pokemon community that doesn't get enough attention.

This video is pretty outdated, and sadly, it seems the only category that sees very much attention is the Any% Glitchless (although there are a few people running the other categories). If nothing else it serves as a snapshot in time to what Pokemon R/B/Y Speedrunning used to be like, so I don't think I'm going to remove it. Maybe I'll post a follow-up one day...

@galararticuno9419 4 жыл бұрын
It was a good start. The only thing that's really outdated is when you said it was the most popular run. I recently saw a 2 games 1 controller run for Blue/Yellow that was pretty cool. I run Gold, Crystal, Sapphire, Emerald, and LeafGreen (all glitchless) if you ever have any questions about anything.

"What is Pokémon speedrunning?" I've watched Werster. Pain. Pain, immense knowledge, planning, dedication, and hopefully not masochism. And luck. But mostly pain. There's some self-hate in it for some, as well. But only if you live on past the point of masters, when the game defines you instead of you just simply playing it.

How to Speedrun Red and Blue: 1) Get Nidoking 2) Get Horn Drill + X Accuracy 3) Add TMs as you go 4) Rek everything in the game 5) World Record of 420 hours
@iss2075
@iss2075 7 жыл бұрын
What I'd be interested to see would be speed running using Pokemon other than Nidoking. I know people have done Blastoise, Clefable, Raticate, even Pidgeot, but having records for every Pokemon would be interesting imo. I know Nidoqueen and Wigglytuff would be easy. I think you could even do Yellow with a Butterfree in under 3 hours easily (X Speed + X Accuracy + Sleep Powder means you can beat technically anything as long as you can survive to set up, and it can have Psychic, Mega Drain, Double-Edge as attacking moves). It would be interesting seeing the different strategies people would have to use. I get a bit bored of watching Nidoking speed runs sometimes. With my emulator I've been cheating a bunch of really strong Pokemon at L5 in place of my starter and playing through the game with them. Mewtwo and Articuno are by FAR the fastest, but they're still very fun. You can skip so many items and Poke Centers when using them. You usually need to heal for PP, rather than HP lol. But even with some of the strongest Pokemon you have to come up with crazy strategies to win. For example, when I did a Moltres "speed run" I found the fastest way to beat Misty was to go and do the SS Anne first to get your levels up a bit, get loads of Super Potions, teach Moltres Bide. When you fight the Starmie you have to use Bide, and keep spamming Super Potions until it uses two non-crit Water Guns in a row, which you can live and then OHKO back. You'd never think you'd have to use such a ridiculous strategy with such a strong Pokemon, but it really is the fastest way to get past Misty (that I can think of) if you're solo-ing the game with a Moltres. And you'd have to use all sorts of weird strategies with other Pokemon in other battles.

Werster is p/m king of pokemon speedruns imo, at one point in time he held almost all the world records for the main title pokemon games simultaneously, and he recently finished a theoretical, or un official category run of pokemon emerald, the category being dominating the battle frontier, a 19 hour run done in a single sitting. Sad to some, but I admire his dedication.

@haroldhall1517 4 жыл бұрын
That was insane. I never even did the frontier but from what I know it is the hardest thing to do (getting all gold) this dude not only got all gold, but did it in a speed run via starting the game from scratch and even training stats all in 1 day

Daniel Baker Well, Generation 3 does have a bunch of major glitches; it's just that setting them up is really hard and wastes almost as much time as it saves. Also, with the void and Pomeg glitches in generation 4 and all the glitches that can be caused by that, it's about as broken as it can get without having an ACE exploit.

Just a note, the GDQ run for Catch Em All was using older rules, and some of the glitches used in the run are now banned. The main one being LG-Fly, the part you showed off where you just force a string of encounters on that one tile. But the video still shows off the run very well, and while the run is much different now, there are still lots of similarities so it's still worth watching!

Your channel seems to be really small, but you're very informative and you really understand what you're talking about. It's a great video, I like this. I subscribed just because of this video, I bet you have more great videos. And I hope you can get more attention, you're a lot more knowledgeable Pokemon than a whole ton of KZbin people around. Oh, I also like how your commentary is very direct to the point, while being easy to understand for people who don't know speedruns, but also being really entertaining to people who know speedruns (I have been watching speedruns and glitches for years, of a lot things, not just Pokemon), and it's nice to see someone who can explain in a easy way for those who don't understand (which unfortunately, a lot of speedrun enthusiasts, can't explain things in a simple way).

The reason the PokéDoll glitch is allowed is because it isn't really a glitch: it's the game acting as it should. The PokéDoll allows you to flee wild battles, and it just so happens that it's considered a victory for the trainer (without giving EXP since the wild Pokémon didn't actually faint).

It's random number generator manipulation, there's a thread on reddit for it. It gets more and more complex with each new game to avoid manipulation ofc. Basically you can control what will happen when it comes to randomness in the game if you manipulate the RNG mathematical formula through precise inputs at precise times. Since the games randomness is generated by the timing of certain things at a fixed tick-rate (which gets faster in games past GBA). Correct me if i'm wrong. I generalized a lot.

Gen 2 pokemon has an interesting any% route using the coin case that is a little easier to understand (in the gen 2 english translations, the coin case's prompt uses an invalid pointer that jumps to the memory that stores data related to the most recently played pokemon cry, which can be manipulated using the pokedex to jump to the memory addresses of your party pokemon, which can be manipulated to jump again to PC items or box names, which can be used to execute arbitrary code, which in the speedrun is used to warp you to Red with 0 pokemon, and when you enter a trainer battle with 0 pokemon in GSC, you auto-win. Thus if you talk to red you auto-win and play the credits.) The only other category is any% glitchless which is 3 hours long so I don't think I'd like to see a video on it, but I thought you would be interested in the any% route, possibly. EDIT: I checked the most recent crystal WR - it uses save corruption but still does ACE through the box names. I find the coin case method so much more interesting though because it resulted from a translation error!
