I think, it is crucial to write both variables, x and y, in the equation when introducing a quadratic function. After all, function is a relationship between two variables, x and y. Students have to see this and understand difference between expressions and function equations.

The equations in all of the examples include f(x) and x. You must be referring to the section where I introduce standard and vertex form of a quadratic. I agree and have added that to my notes! Thank you for bringing that to my attention!

Hi David, the axis of symmetry is the vertical line that cuts the parabola in half, so the parabola will look like a reflection (mirror image, symmetrical) across the axis of symmetry. It’s an invisible line, and we typically use a dashed line to show where the axis of symmetry is on a parabola. The axis of symmetry passes through the vertex, which is the highest or lowest point of the parabola. And because equations of vertical likes are written as x=c, the equation for the axis of symmetry will be x= whatever the x-value of the vertex is. I hope that makes sense!
