I don't remember the players, but there was a GM game from last year where this exact tactic got played, so I am sure Robert recalled that game. There is a relatively well known game in the Trompowsky which may have been the first time this tactic was deployed. I have no doubt Fabi knew about both games.

True, but he said he had a little help from the engine since he saw white was winning after bishop to e4, and then searched for the winning moves by process of elimination.

It's not often that winning a game makes up for losing the match but this is an example where it is. No one's going to remember who won the match-up or the tournament but Fabiano slaughtering a super GM in 9 moves will be remembered for a long time!

I heard people say Firouzja spent 2 and a half minutes on Bxh1, but the clock indicates it was more like 55 seconds. That's still more time for calculating than a purely impulsive decision.

I think using the word 'condemned' is actually more appropriate for this quote, but I do know that the typical way is to use doomed instead.

Fabi's laugh at the end costed him the match though. Firouzja, on the question of how he bounced back after such loss, mentioned in the interview that once he saw Fabi laughing, he got motivated more than ever to beat the guy and that's what happened.

If a GM leaves a rook hanging, I'd be having alarms going off in my head like crazy. I guess Firouzja thought Fabiano was betting on him smelling a non existent rat and letting him keep developing pieces, or something.

This video is also a great example of how useful it is to see the eval bar, even for GMs. The reason Robert found this tactic so quickly while Firoujza couldn't was mostly because the eval bar told him that Be4 is still good for white. Therefore, he figured white doesn't need to save the first rook, which allowed him to find the 2nd rook "sac" too.
