The only difference between what I have written and what you have is that in yours (which I agree is in common usage), the phase term corresponding to the projection of the baseline toward the (l=0,m=0) coordinate has been factored out front. In this case, the "w term" describes deviation from flatness, and can be dropped in the flat-sky approximation. I prefer to leave it in, since it makes it easier to see that the phase term is just the baseline dotted with the source direction.

thanks for the tutorial. I was very helpful. I'm trying to build an antenna array to operate 1420MHz. Can you help me with the structure design? I'm finding it difficult to decide separation and size parameters of each antenna dish

Could you please explain why you have w*sqrt(1-l^2-m^2) whereas most papers have w*(sqrt(1-l^2-m^2) - 1)? Thanks (e.g EVLA memo 67)
