I actually own this novel. I haven't read it yet cuz it's massive, densely written, and it scares me. But I plan on reading it next year as one of my New Year's resolutions. Will you please do videos for the other 3 novels? I'd love to know more about them.
@taroultraman19 жыл бұрын
+PhoenixTsukino You should read ROTK first after that Journey To The West and Water Margin. I think Three Kingdoms is the best out of three. I've never read Dream Of Red Chambers so I can't tell if it's good or not
@DarthJF9 жыл бұрын
+PhoenixTsukino you should get to know the story through some other media before you read the novel. Watch one of the tv dramas or even play Dynasty Warriors. I started reading the book just recently after owning it for years and knowing the most important characters and events beforehand makes the novel much more enjoyable. Now I can appreciate the writing instead of making notes about who's who.

***** I have played Dynasty Warriors before though it's been a while. It was actually the reason I bought the novel. ^_^ I've also seen a video game called Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I should probably look into that as well. Do you have a recommendation for TV drama?
@DarthJF9 жыл бұрын
The tv drama I've seen is Three Kingdoms from 2010 and I can definitely recommend it. You should be able to watch it from some drama streaming sites etc. There's also earlier one made during the 90s, but I haven't seen that one yet.

the only reason why i'm so knowledgeable about or even interested in the three kingdoms is because of dynasty warriors. That was a great frickin game.
@timetochronicle8 жыл бұрын
It was mine too. But there's a shitload of anime and manga that also uses the three kingdoms as a theme. Off the top of my head you can have a faithful adaptation of the original classic novel, to yaoi bromance, to insipid high schools fighting each other and showing their pantsu. Also it was sued as the setting for what I think, arguably, was the best game Sega ever made - Sangokushi Taisen

The only thing I disliked about Three Kingdoms was the negative bias against Cao Cao.
@beckylikesushi8 жыл бұрын
Really? I never talked to anybody about Three Kingdoms but Ive heard lots praise for Cao Cao and his military tactics. Perhaps outside of praise for military strategies, he was not so nice or forgiving in his younger years, but I think he softened a lot in his older years. Even that part where he "borrowed" the head. Apparently, from my understanding, there was a miscalculation or mistake in the food supply lines, resulting in a lot of hungry, grumbling soldiers. Wanting to avoid any, discontentment or resentment towards him, Cao Cao then asked for the head of the head (pun no intended) of organizing food supplies... With a scapegoat, many soldiers were silenced with the delivery of "justice", and those that saw through the ruse were cowed into silence. Overall, it was pretty smart move, perhaps barbaric with modern standards, but considering so many men were dying left and right, one servant's life was well worth the stopping of solider complaints

So he ordered the guy in charge of rations executed for “stealing grain” when it was he who ordered the guy to give smaller rations in the first place. Essentially feeding his army less and using him as a scape goat.

Indeed, besides killling 100,000 civilians and ransacking Xu Province, burying surrendered troops of Yuan Shao alive, allowing Cheng Yu and Man Chong to cannibalize and torture people, slaughtering the families of Dong Cheng and Ma Chao, executing his own stepdaughter Lady Cui because of her glamorous clothes, raping Zhang Xiu's aunt and abusing the child Han emperor as a tool to invade other regions, he’s no Wei a tyrant.
@alexanderchristopher62375 жыл бұрын
@@Megumi_Bandicoot well, in this era, it's kill or be killed. I like his motto, "It's better for I to betray the world rather than the world betray me." And it did worked. Despite his cruelty, his kingdom managed to stick like glue and eventually Wei is the victor of the Three Kingdoms. Yes, I know the Sima clan toppled the Wei dynasty and became Jin, but they still inherit its military and economy. And I like the "no Wei". I see what you did there.

When you are done reading the book you have this duality running through your mind that ultimately all the struggle and death and hardship was really for nothing, but at the same time the deeds that were done would live forever in the human spirit. It has a similar sadness to it that the Lord of the Rings generates. That sadness is the hallmark of a great work.

That would be Wade-Giles translation, which is how they transliterated the names back in the 18th century The modern naming like Liu Bei, Cao Cao and Sun Ce uses the Hanyu Pinyin style of Romanization. I find that the Wade Giles version is more phonetically attuned to how the names would actually sound, but the Hanyu Pinyin looks a lot nice and presentable.

***** I'd say Yes or no. The Gongsun clan's reign and then defeat by Wei in Yodong province was kinda ephemeral, before Koguryo's restoration and further big territorial expansion into Manchuria, no? Even if you are right, I think the beginning plot should then include also the Gongsun clan, not just Wei.
@tomcatpak9 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, I know that the word 中原 was there before. However, it took a new turn, when the Ming Dynasty started proclaiming itself as the "Central Government" of the universe. That's what that word 中國 came from. The peripheral nations were just "regional governments" because Ming was the central one. That's how the Ming dynasty developed the meaning of 中原.
@tomcatpak9 жыл бұрын
***** Han just called themselves as Han. And they were very proud to do so. I don't recall them calling themselves as the "middle kingdom(中國)" in any ancient scripts. The idea of central plain is not that old to begin with.

Liu Bei's kingdom suppose to be 漢Han! Not 蜀Shu(abbreviation of region of SiChuan“4 gorges”) Since he declared himself as the Emperor of Han then one can tell his ambition to restore the Han Dynasty. However the name “Shu” was given by CaoPi(eldest son of Cao who overthrown Han) of Wei to discrimate his rival kingdom
@alexanderchristopher62375 жыл бұрын
Well, Cao Pi did force the real Han emperor to abdicate, so he picks up the title as emperor of Han. Liu Bei, using his ancestry as a political tool, declared himself emperor of Han as well. But it's confusing to write or say "Han forces clash against Han forces". It's better to discriminate each side so we know who's who

Liu bei's kingdom is called "Han(汉)" not "Shu(蜀)" as Liu claims he's the legitimate heir of Han dynasty. Also three kingdoms only happen towards the end of that historical period. It's not like these three warlords all start with one kingdom and vie for uniting China. Most of the time Liu Bei and Sun Quan were just trying to stop Cao Cao's march. By the time the battle of Red Cliff happened, Liu Bei didn't even have his own territory. Historical accuracy please. Just because the hosts are Chinese doesn't mean research could be sloppy.
