"The problem is, we learn techniques without understanding what we are doing." That to me is the beating heart issue of what is wrong with modern math education. In my time in math classes through calc II I spent most my time surrendered to this very fact. Don't try to figure out what the heck is going on; just focus on mindlessly executing steps prescribed for whatever bewildering mess of math symbols the teacher flopped on my desk.
@ev.c6

DR Hayden Modern math? It used to be worse back then, where only a fraction of people could learn and understand it. The big problem is the stigma around it, where parents completely demotivate their kids to learn it. It’s also not very intuitive and you only find its true value later in life.
@shillpolice7981
@shillpolice7981 3 жыл бұрын
Its not about the KIDS, Its not about the PARENTS, Its not even about MATH. Its about the FACT that historically math as a SUBJECT Matter is natural to so few, ....AND to most / NOT at all. The folks its natural too ARE POOR EXTROVERTS. Extroverts are "artists" and THE BEST TEACHERz when capable of making the conversion. (A RARE BEAST) - So you historically have a bunch of ASSES (intentional or not) who are completely INEPT at TELLING US WHY THEY DO WHAT THEY DO. Or *DEMONSTRATING* HOW IT RELATES TO REAL WORLD APPLICATION. SADLY, I expect that "poor math teachers" are stemmed from "poor baseball players"... Meaning, they were on the bench THEN, they put us on the bench NOW... And I am not joking. Its like some secret club that THEY JUSTIFY leaving the rest out of IN TURN, "as we don't belong" ..> AS IF... We cant understand them at whatever level of interpretation they are WILLING TO ATTEMPT... I'm not going to totally bash on math teachers as I am sure the majority do try to convey the message. BUT.... This guy Dr. Leonard is a BASEBALL STAR that has mastered the ART OF MATH and thus can demonstrate. HE CROSSED BOUNDARIES AND ON MORE THAN ONE AXIS (for all you avg math teachers envious of his abilties).... He keys on GRAPHICAL ANALYSIS which is the most GENERIC FORM or technical presentation of REAL WORLD APPLICATION - In its simplest "analogy".... Which in turn turns written equations TO GRAVY... Its so much bigger than all this tho as Dr. Leonard is like some kind of secret Govt. designed prodigy where he is indoctrinated with A METHOD to his teaching which is SYSTEMIC as maximum effectiveness and efficacy in every way. This is all coming from a failed cal student from the mid nineties giving it another shot. The LEONARD - IS DA SHIZZLE....! And hey, I'm LAZY,, ADD, and STILL SUCK. But his presentations still give me a glimmer of hope. And the best part is the technology that allows the LUXURY of REPITITION here on Ytube. This horse may actually drink before he dies...

I rarely ever comment on any video but i felt it was necessary to do so for professer Leonard even though i dont think he will ever read this. Im a college student and you sir have been the most helpful out of all the professors i have ever had. You posses all the great qualities of an examplray teacher. The way you break down difficult concepts and explain it in such a simple manner is reqmarkable to say the least. You have made me believe that i can learn and improve in mathematics. If it was upto me i would donate all my math courses fee to your patreon. Keep it up prof, if half the math teachers had a quarter of your abilities people would view mathematics in a completely different prespective. Once again from the bottom of my heart, Thank you so much.

Just posting this on the most recent video so you see it. I'd just like to say thank you soo soooo soooo soooooo much for your 3-hour video on Stokes' theorem and Divergence Theorem as well as general integration over paths. You saved me from failing my exam. I had barely studied because I had a huge mental block all of last term and I found your video the night of the exam and watched and followed the whole way through. For once, everything seemed really clear and when I went into the exam, I managed to pass, as needed. But, that wasn't just any pass. That pass allowed me to proceed in my engineering degree and NOT be held back yet another year. Again, thank you sooooo much and keep fighting the good fight. I'm just here to remind you that your lessons save actual lives!

Bit of help here, his Intermediate Algebra course used "Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, 5th edition, Elayn Martin-Gay". ISBN-10: 1256776181 How do I know? It's from his course syllabus. I also watched and studied his entire video series on Int. Algebra. It follows that book almost perfectly. There is a slight variation in section 12 where one video combines two sections in the book. Its slightly confusing at first but completely manageable. Just be aware of it. Hopefully others can help us find the rest of the books.

Also, as best I can tell his Calc 1 course used Thomas' Calculus (12th Edition) ISBN-10: 0321587995. I have not been through that video series yet, so I can't say for sure.

Why don’t you just move some of the intermediate algebra videos in this playlist. There is some overlap in both courses. Such exponentials and logarithms, etc. And just focus on covering new topics which show up in college algebra?
@ProfessorLeonard
@ProfessorLeonard 4 жыл бұрын
You know, I really did think about it, but I'm not going to for two reasons. 1) Many people don't watch the Intermediate stuff and it's so much older, I don't want to lose the flow and 2) I have picked up some better ways of explaining many of the concepts and am choosing to put it here rather than refilm Intermediate. Does that make sense? I really appreciate you noticing though! It means you've watched and paid attention. Thanks!

I have always wondered when Professor Leonard was born. I remember him saying at the end of the 6th video in Calculus 3 something like "after 12 years, I finally got a computer that works" about his classroom's computer, and that was in 2016, so he must have been at least in his mid-30s there. So maybe he is about 40 years old today?
