How do you come up with the numbers for the chart to determine the number of stages? With the way it has been presented, there seems to be a chicken and egg situation ongoing. Do you have to calculate the mass balance at each stage to obtain values to create the equilibrium line and the operating line, plot it and then determine the number of stages, or do you get the values for the operating line and equilibrium line from elsewhere before determining the number of stages?

If I may ask, it is assumed that stripping gas will not participate in VLE? Is this true in real life? If we assume stripping gas also participates in VLE which means we need to follow general Roults law for given ternary mixture?

Yes, a stripping gas like air will not not condense so it will not participate in VLE

So this is in mole ratio not mole fraction? Why cant we use mole fractions?

Mole ratios are just more convenient because the concentrations are so low.
