Well said! I’m publishing a weekly KZbin video on episodes from the life of Don Bosco, entitled ST JOHN BOSCO by JOE ZAMMIT. In this series I’m narrating events and miracles from the splendid life of Don Bosco. St John Bosco used to perform a miracle almost every day, through the intercession of Mary Help of Christians. From the lives of saints we can learn how to love God more and draw closer to him. Thank you

Jeff, with the greatest respect, you know more than most that between the 390’s AD and 1517, a period of 1,200 years the entire Christian body read from one canon of scripture before Martin Luther, on his own authority decided to go with the Jewish canon because aspects of the deutero-canon did not suit his novel brand of theology.
@yvobalcer3 жыл бұрын
Your statements are true, Luther did not believe in Purgatory, which points to that in Maccabees.
@Liberty23573 жыл бұрын
And if you want to get technical about it there never was a Jewish canon besides the pentateuch because there was never any one who had the authority to decide. Some Jews thought those were the only holy books and some included the Deuterocanonical books, even today Ethiopian Jews has the Deuterocanonical books as a part of their holy scripture.

Such a great discussion about the Roman history and politics, also how God had plans for all of us. * 66 books in the Protestant Canon and 73 books in the Catholic canon- nobody added or removed books. The Septuagint- Greek Old Testament was used until the Reformation and the reformers decided to not go with the Greek but Jewish old testament canon. We must indeed be open to these books and understand that they are part of the history that we must study. *_ Even if Jews don't find Maccabbees as inspired word of God, Hanukkah- that happened in Maccabbees is important for Jews. 25th day of Kislev - 8 nights and days. *_ Old pithy to remember Old Israel enemies- eat a big purple grape- eat = Egypt, a = Assyria, big= Babylon, purple = Persia, and grape = Greece. Then Rome. *_ Alexander the Great - Hellenized the world (Adoption of the Greek culture and Gods). Conquered the world except India! Left the Kingdom to two generals- Ptolemais (tolerant like Alexander) and Seleucids (Antiochus Epiphanes= evil like Ahab and Jezebel). Seleucids going to Modine and forcing Jews to eat pork and desecrated the temple so Jews resisted and revolted against Greeks- Hanukkah- re-dedication of the temple. Feast of Lights as Jesus celebrated it. *_ Maccabbees 2:7 - Martyred Jewish mother with 7 sons for not compromising on God's law about pig meat. Mother saw her sons getting killed - similar to Mother Mary seeing the crucifixion of Jesus. *_ Dr. Scott Hahn and Kimberly's son Jeremiah. Don't let my son suffer as a priest. Well, suffering is a part of how we serve God! *_ Maccabbees 2:12- Sacrifice for the people before us. Alive through Christ in spirit *_ Maccabbees 2: 4 to 7- People hid the Ark in a cave them waited till God gathers His people ( birth of Jesus). Mary is the new Ark of the Covenant *_ The First Triumvirate was formed in 60 B.C.E. by Julius Caesar, Gnaeus Magnus Pompey, and Marcus Licinius Crassus in response to laws being passed by the Senate to try and restrain them and limit their power. *_ Julius Ceasar "proclaiming himself as God" adopted a son called Octavian, who became a part of the The Second Triumvirate was an extraordinary commission and magistracy created at the end of the Roman republic for Mark Antony, Lepidus, and Octavian. Defeating Mark Antony and Lepidus, Octavian became the sole Emperor- as Ceasar Augustus- the prince of peace, son of "god a.k.a. Julius Caesar," and ushered euangelion (good news for the world). - All of this is foreshadowing Jesus! *_ Jeff Cavins is right. We must not lose hope even if we do not see the fruits of our faith. Catechism paragraph 1- God has a plan for us. Politics and social issues are not in the right direction but God will make things right. Thank you for your analysis Fr. Mike, Jeff Cavins and Team Ascension. God bless you and the fellow listeners

In my physical Bible there's a footnote that mentions that one of the reasons Maccabees is not in the Jewish Canon is because it portrayed the Romans in a positive light. This is a time period before the Romans were oppressing the Jews hence why they are presented in a positive light in the book of Maccabees. But as the Romans would later oppress the Jews the Jews did not like anything that made the Romans look good, so they no longer recognize the book of Maccabees.
@stephensjj6 ай бұрын
One other aspect of Jews not wanting Maccabees to be in the Masoretic text was the idea that Rome would not look kindly on a story about Jews rising up against foreign oppressors. The history of the various Jewish uprisings in the first century provides a lot of context. “Why Catholic Bibles are Bigger” by Gary Michuta is one of the best books out there on the topic.

One would think that if an empire conquered a land and went to far as to demand that they violate their faith and commandments of that faith, that they would demand that anything be written in their language. It makes perfect sense to me that Jews would write scripture in Greek (during that occupation) in order to have widest dissemination of those scriptures.

The ancient books combined Jeremiah and Lamentations, so Catholic Bibles had 72 books, and Protestants threw away 6 and kept 66! JESUS used and quoted from the Septuagint, because the Rabbis at Jamnia didn't throw away the Maccabees,etc, until the 2ndcentury A.D.... The Feast of the Maccabee Martyrs is August 1.

With the limitations of ancient culture including the lack of literacy, difficulties of transportation, cost of bookmaking, etc., I wonder if the reason the Septuagint was used was because it was what they had on hand and easiest to disseminate because it was in Greek (lots of Greek speakers around, easy to find a scribe to copy, etc). I assume textual criticism didn’t exist yet, and early Christians might have been grateful to have any text in any language at all. I imagine it would have been rare indeed to have two copies of the same text in the same place at once to be able to compare them. So I wonder if early versions of the Bible were more likely to be accepted uncritically by Christians, most of whom could not possibly verify them for accuracy. I wonder if the Septuagint came into existence in part just for practical purposes. Verification of texts would have fallen to literate scholars and leaders to determine as they saw the need arise over time. The ancient world was so different from ours.

@sunrhyze2 жыл бұрын
I'm new to this, but from what I understand, you "hail" Mary or another saint in order to get their attention and praise them, basically, and then ask them to pray to God on your behalf. So you're not actually praying "to" the saint.
@hotwings32 жыл бұрын
That’s correct! You ask Our Mother Mary and saints for prayers as you would ask a friend to pray for you. I was raised Baptist and converted 13 years ago and Mary has had a very big part of leading me to her son.

Theres plenty of examples of people in scripture asking people from heaven to help them. From the Rich man asking Abraham for assitance, to Judas Maccabees getting a sword from Jeremiah. The Angel says "Hail Mary full of grace" which is the basis for the hail mary.

I'm a little disappointed with the "neither" statement. Protestants did take out those books. I was a self-righteous Prot and believed that Catholics added books to the Bible. I converted about 16 years ago and while in RCIA, I went to one of Cavins' talks in the basement of a local Church with about 20 other people! Please don't do this ecumenical "neither" argument. The Catholic Church is the true Church. Prots hate Catholics. I used to teach at a "Christian" University and I was fired after converting. Prots are wrong. Only speak the truth. Never dumb down heretical beliefs in an effort to win them over.

@@nikolabrnada1256 I'm a fan of St. Athanasius. He stomped on heritics. We have enough problems within the current Catholic Church. We must uphold orthodoxy. No where in scriptures does it ever refence Mary as the new tabernacle. This is man's teaching, and it’s not Biblical teaching. Nor does the Bible ever teach to pray or worship Mary because she was chosen to give birth to our Lord and Savior. Not one reference to Mary is made by the Apostles after the gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the NT.
