As a Protestant I have never heard this reading before. As a matter of fact until a few years ago I didnt even know it existed. I wonder why something so powerful was removed from Protestant Bibles? It is like the founders of the churches were trying to hide something. I am enjoying this so much. Thank you Father Mike. God Bless you all.

That is awesome! I have a Catholic Bible but it was a huge hard cover. So I had bought a King James smaller version about a year ago. I was sad to realize how much was removed. So I went back to the Catholic version. Then just bought the version he’s reading from. It reads so much easier. I’m so happy to hear you enjoy the reading

I was always taught that fear of the Lord is the fear of offending the God who loves you. Something I can depend on to help my fight against temptations is to remember the line in the "act of contrition" "but most of all because it offends you O God who are all good and deserving of all my love." Thank-you Fr. Mike for your time, your enthusiasm, and your teachings, I love both of your "in a year "podcasts and the work they are doing in my soul. It almost feels like these kind of things are the things that would happen at the end times. It's almost like it's something from The Book of Revelation. Pray that such events as these do not happen in our future. For there are evil and powerful people in the world today who seek to do these types of things forcing the whole world to adopt a single Doctrine and abandon the true faith. They would seek to do all that was done to the faithful Jews in Maccabees to the Christian Community.

I want to honor my mom and dad all the days of my life and I want God to help me to do that. How true is this? I’m wondering if we are going through soft totalitarianism in the western world. So scary to think about because many of us are encouraged to fit in with a certain ideology or to subscribe to narratives that can be ridiculous at times. Those of us who differ in the slightest brand upon and marked out and even laughed at. So much truth from the book of Maccabees and Sarah. So much wisdom once more for the problems. There’s so much in the Proverbs about Hardwork and honorable people and even if you are intimidated by scripture, I think that the book of Proverbs is a great way to start.

Hello Maccabees !! there is so much content here to think about, I am so grateful that I live in this age of grace, some of this makes painful reading. I think really this fear of the Lord equates to having a good opinion of God, we know that he is a good God and has our best interests at heart, our part is to filter this life through that prism. Thank you all who bring this to my lap top everyday, I for one cannot wait to see you tomorrow.

I attended funeral Masses for my in-laws and at one of the funerals the passage in Sirach was read where alms atones for sins. I was abhorred because I was Baptist and only Jesus' death and resurrection atones for sin and outside of that there was no atonement. I was to read this passage according to family members but the Catholic Church wouldn't let me because I wasn't in full communion with the Catholic Church. When I became Catholic I gladly became a lector for a while and now I accept such passages of scripture as I was very interested in second Maccabees about Judas' indulgences for the men who died in battle wearing a pagan signat around their necks. I saw how wrong Luther was in depriving the deuterocononical book from being read. Luther was diabolical in so many ways it infuriates me. There's a great problem of men twisting scripture to suit themselves even today. Something should be said about Sirach's father, Jesus. This is not Christ Jesus if there be any confusion.

@ 9:48 ? Im assuming that Jesus was a common name and Sirach is in no way stating that God was his Grandfather. Just wanted to state that here to ensure no ambiguity for anyone. October 19, 2023 Round Two Will you please take a moment and pray with me? According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory: Eternal Father, I offer You the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, for those in my own home, and in my family. Amen. In her account of another vision, St. Faustina describes Purgatory as a "great crowd of suffering souls" undergoing purification. Further, she says that the souls are "praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid" (Diary, 20)

I am finding that 'Fear of The Lord' is something strongly demanded. Don't make the mistake of thinking that God is just a nice guy. If you sin don't think 'oh God doesn't mind. He understands.' FEAR HIM and don't think because you are forgiven that the consequences disappear. People have become very relaxed and for example wear inappropriate clothing to church and feel God doesn't care what i wear as long is i come. That person may be wrong and shouldn't test it.
