Philatelic Society of Lancaster County member Bob Kotanchik present an introduction to the Machin Issues of Great Britain. This is one of the longest running worldwide definitive stamp issues, one that began in 1964.
How did these get started? Who designed them? How are colours picked? How can one be told from another? If security precautions are used, what are they? What makes these stamps such an interesting issue to collect?
It’s all here. Enjoy this primer on Great Britain's longest running definitive stamp issues.

I'm from the UK and have been collecting GB stamps since I was a kid. I have a vast, almost complete set of Machins, but I learned some new things watching this presentation. Great job, well presented and very informative, thank you!

"The longest continuously issued design in postal history". Is that really so? Have Norway's posthorn motif stamp not been issued for over 100 years, with only minor adjustments of design to match new printing technology. But a great talk. Thanks for posting this!

Why doesn't our APS staff that produces our monthly have a column dealing with all the Machin stuff?. Are they waiting for the Queen to die? I have always relied on Scott and I went into detail with them only as far as Scott did. I did borrow a SG from my club library and was amazed that they went into different shades on many stamps that Scott completely avoided for example on some of the earliest of GB issues. Then I looked at the Machins and flipped out. So after that I got a stockbook just for Machins and sorted by color & denom only hoping one day I would be able to make sense out of it all, Thanks for a wonderful presentation. There must be a chemical one can use(not water) to remove backing on the latest stuff without destroying the stamp. I use Lighter fluid on US and it works fine. Then you just scrap off the goo with a credit card. Thanks again for a wonderful presentation. Been a member of APS since 2017.

Hi from the UK. The SG catalogue is a great source of knowledge for the Machins, especially the differences with Phosphor bands. I have a vast collection of the Machins, I have a stock book with a small printed catalog number for each stamp, so it helps me track what I am missing. As for the self-adhesives, I have had some joy with Isopropyl alcohol in removing them from paper.

I hate to contradict this fine presentation, but the symbol on the Wales regional issues is a Dragon, not a Griffin.

Thank you for reaching out to the PSLC and glad you enjoyed the presentation. Might I suggest, if you live in the U.S., that you reach out to the American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) and locate a reputable dealer in your region that view and assess your stamp collection. Wishing you well with your collection and visit the Philatelic SOciety of Lancaster County (PA) website any time. Regards, Charles J. DiComo, PhD, President

I love and collect the machins. I was so looking forward to watching this video. I found a plus and a minus. The information is very, very good. But, and no disrespect intended, the presenter does such a horrible job that I can only watch and listen for a few minutes at a time. He is very knowledgable but as i contemplate further videos from this channel, I do hope you utilize a different speaker. I'm not a great orator but this video is nearly unwatchable in spite of it's excellent information. Sorry to be so rude. Please keep up the informative videos but please change speakers.

Good day and we appreciate you taking the time to watch this presentation on the Machin's by my good friend Bob. He was very knowledgeable on this topic, and many others. I am saddened to share that Bob K. passed away last year. Fortunately, we have his many presentations and publications in our archive for posterity. And feel free to view the 70+ other videos we have on our channel, and the hundreds of presentations, exhibits and reprints on our website at www.lcps-stamps.org. Of course, reach out to me any time.
