A talk from Virtual Stampex 2020 by two GBPS members. Leading collector/exhibitor/dealer Bill Barrell and leading expert/collector on these issues Mike Williams discuss these classic British issues, and in particular the 1d black and 1d red, although the principles discussed can be applied to all line engraved stamps. Bill looks at the printing process, the issue of the 1d black, and many aspects of the 1d red. Mike discusses several more in depth aspects including the importance of plate 'tilt' in the plating process, as well as methods of distinguishing the pale rose shades of 1857 from those of 1861-4 and a much easier and unheralded way to distinguish between the two dies.
