Introduction to The Mount

Located in Lenox, Massachusetts, The Mount is both a historic site and a center for culture inspired by the passions and achievements of Edith Wharton. Designed and built by Edith Wharton in 1902, the house embodies the principles outlined in her influential book The Decoration of Houses (1897). The property includes three acres of formal gardens designed by Wharton, who was also an authority on European landscape design, surrounded by extensive woodlands. Programming at The Mount reflects Wharton's core interests in the literary arts, interior design and decoration, garden and landscape design, and the art of living. Annual exhibits explore themes from Wharton's life and work.

Visited this past summer. Fascinating, beautiful place--and everyone who works there, from the cashier in the gift shop to the young women giving tours and answering questions, was knowledgeable and very friendly. If you have the chance, GO! Even if, like my fellow traveler this past summer, you are not (yet) a fan of Wharton's, you will enjoy the house tour and the grounds. This area of the Berkshires is beautiful--and the nearby towns of Lenox and Lee are gorgeous, as well.

I found this video emphasized the spirit that one finds at the Mount. Unlike so many home museums, the architecture and the gardens themselves are the tangible products of their creator's rigorous intellect rather than their means. The interior designers that interpreted the restored spaces were exceptionally sensitive. Geoffrey Bradfield's hallway and Bunny Williams's dining rooms will linger in my memory
