For someone who isn't already a violinist, I really don't know, but it depends on how accurately you want to play those notes. Getting to the point where you can play simple tunes in any range and sound reasonable probably takes anywhere from a few months to a year if you have no background, just because you don't have to put the Otamatone under your chin or use a bow.

Hi Galen - I've never heard of an otamatone before today. There are several unanswered questions. I assume, as with the violin, the otamatone plays in the treble [G] clef. Does it play in one or two octaves? Is it a full chromatic instrument? Does it come with a fingering chart? BTW: Since I play the violin, mandolin and ukulele, it appears I would be a good candidate with this instrument.

I found that with either one, you have to use one finger. It is nearly impossible to be play consistent intonation when switching fingers, simply cause of how close the notes are with each other.
