When you are striking a lot of the energy is going back into you.this is rebound. rebound is caused by tension in the muscles. to eliminate tension you need to practice the sil lim tao form correctly (most don't). extending your arms until they are straight will bring the shoulders into contraction pulling your arms out of the centreline, this will make it harder to hit without rebound. the sil lum tao form teaches you not to extend too far because you can feel when the shoulders "switch on"

Hi, You're right about that being a potential mistake when fighting. In this beginner's drill, we allow new students to drag their fist down the bag so they get the feeling of lowering the front hand. I've found this works nicely to prevent them from punching forward in an arc (since the straight line is now clear). So while it does have some incorrectness it brings some value to some students so I thought I would share it as one of our many teaching methods.

We put aquarium stone in the bags. It's already nicely rounded so we dont get those jaggy stone edges.

What you say seems like it could work; I'm going to try it out. I've taught many students and I believe that no one way works for everybody so I try in my videos to explain it in a way that appeals to many - even though it may have some technical gaps for more senior people to discuss. Another gotcha for me is that in a video there is only enough time to partially explain one way so I have to decide which it will be. I have about 15 ways to teach punching to beginners (now). Thanks! :)

Wonderful segment! Anyone should know these things if they are passionate about wing chun. My own sifu taught me to use the wall target and sandbags but also when we would not have anything else he would use old phone books to condition the hands. Old phone books make wonderful targets for this as do old newspapers.conditioning definitely works. Thank you for the wonderful ideas!

@wbelonoha In practice, the difference is, the fist that hits, should not go down then back, but almost diagonally back and tucking under. Hope I've clarified.

@wbelonoha Yes. Point 2: In the video you hit the bag&then your fist goes down to make room for the next punch.This is -I consider - wrong,or at least not the best regarding chain punches;the fist that hits should slide back,*slightly*down diagonally&under,*almost*keeping contact with the newcoming wrist&forearm.The fist hits it pullsback,not drags down, ittucks under the other fist that'salready on its way. It's as if, when the fist pulls back, the 2nd is pushed sligthly dows to make entry.

@wbelonoha This, after giving them a 30 second stretch break. Insist, that they still maintain tiring grinding skin touch for another 3-4 minutes, narrowing the circle (but now as I said, 6inches from wrist) as if the are firing rockets from a canon, a tight tube. Once they perceived this movement, give them another 30 sec. break &tell them to open yet more the grinding forearm movement, still visualizing they are shooting from a tight canon tube. This, is what I’d do. -I do not have student’s.
@Purewater777
@Purewater777 12 жыл бұрын
@wbelonoha I see. Well, what you can do is, tell them to place 1)one fist about 8-10 inches from their chest. 2)the other fist on top, so that they have both wrists touching, one on top of the other.Then tell them, to start grinding them in a small circular motion(chain punch way),not losing skin touch.Details at this point don't matter, the idea behind them is what we want.After 4-5 minutes of tiring very small circles,tell them to slightly open the circle about 6 inchesfrom their wrist.Cont->

@speedykicks I've never seen a punching bag seriously damage a brick wall so I would guess that it should be safe. There may be some discoloration of the wall if the punching bag color bleeds out. Good luck in your training.

@Powerful - you're right. This drill is for beginners, a drill usually started on their 3rd or 4th day in ving tsun. I don't recommend a 4th day student punch with full power, nor do I expect them to have a powerful punch after only 4 days. With continued practice and evolution of this beginner technique, the technique will evolve and power will grow.

@lawmac2010 : You're right about the redness - so I say "stop when they're redish" and people should therefore stop before the cracking, splitting and tearing. Those things take so long to heal I like to stop before that happens. The new leather bags are great. They are smooth and virtually eliminate the cracking/splitting/tearing. I have a few of them and the are all very enjoyable to train on. What makes you believe I'm right handed?

Hi. I'm not sure it was mentioned and I usually recommend the returning fist come back underneath on the most efficient line while the punching fist goes forward in a straight line. However some people still have a tendency to loop the punch going forward so it goes over the returning fist. For those beginners I get them to drop the front fist before punching again. It's a solution to a specific problem and not the average way I teach it. Thanks!

Hi, There are many commercial jows you can buy at your local Chinatown that should work fine. Each jow is a special blend of a number of different herbs that provide specific benefits so a general jow will be different than a blend made specifically for wing chun or for another type of training. I use (and sell) my teacher's jow which is formulated specifically for the training methods of ving tsun. I hope this helps.

The punch is called 日字冲拳 because the fist is vertical like the "sun character". With a square stance and equal reach there is no "front" vs "back" punch. The wall bag is called 墙靶 which literally means "wall target". The heavy bag is called 沙包 which means "sand bag".

Is there a difference between being right or left handed when training? I think the object is to build both bone density, and muscle memory...correct? I notice that the amount of force that is being applied to the bag is rather violent. I also note that after making contact with the bag, your fist is dragging against the bag downward, and brought back to it's first position. Is this part of the proper form in recoiling the arm for the next punch?

I've enjoyed all the videos. I have seen posted. I didn't read all the comments. I was just wondering if it was mentioned. To not drag your knuckles down the bag. When retracting your punch? I know its common sense yet I've seen it done. Have a great day and keep up the great work othe clips.
@SifuWayne

@TheSeeker0131 good q - As a first week drill I want the student to just move their front hand down instead of looping their back punch up and around the bottom hand. What I show here is one way to teach it that habit. I don't feel that dropping the hand is a violent movement - ie: I would not say to a student "this is a violent move". I say "drop the front hand out of the way so the back one can go straight". The retracting fist gets more efficient with practice.

Hi Sirus, We have a theory in our style that says punches should go in a straight line toward the opponent (not up, down, or sideways). It's why we also call our punch the "arrow punch" or "straight punch". Many other styles have a chopping punch for blocking - so it's a valid technique - just not one we use. We call it a mistake (according to our theories) because we strive to be optimal in motion, energy and time. We just believe circular downward is less optimal than linear inward. Thoughts?

I was wondering where you train that you come to know this level of information. Is it possible to extend the arms to almost full extension (elbow a fist and thumb distance from the body) and not have tension in the muscles; will rebound happen if the arms are "dead" at impact? Does the makeup of the wall become a factor? Thanks.

@trubblman Well said. I try to remind people of the differences between learning and fighting. Learning to ride a bike requires training wheels yet there are no training wheels in the tour de france. Additionally, not everybody learns the same way so it's necessary to have at least a few different methods of teaching the same thing - and this is one method. I agree with everything you said!

you're getting a lot of rebound buddy, need to do spend a few more hours in your sil lum tao (provided you are doing the form correctly). make contact with the bag when your arm is closer (punch closer) because the straighter your arm, the more your shoulder muscles will pull the arm out of the centreline.
@SifuWayne

@Yourjoking999 Yes, you've clarified well. You're right on the points you make; and when fighting we typically do as you say - with both punches very tight and the back one going back on a very tight line. I did this video for people who had never punched before (first day) because I found that when I tried to get them to be very tight on their first day they ended up looping their top hand in a big circle instead of going straight. How do you fix that problem with your students?

His slow motion shows his mistake. If he applies his chain punches in a real fight this way, there's too much time lost between his hits. The correct way is:1)as the fist hits bag, the other hand should already be on the way, to replace the previous fist that landed.2)the punch that hits, should pull back, not down 3)the hands should almost not lose "skin" touch, as they interact back and forth. This way a)the time gap between punches is greatly minimized, b) the front gate is always closed.

Why is it a mistake when in Wing Tsun the circular motion of punches is also used in trapping arms. Or striking an opponents arm downwards. Any down wards is intentional not a mistake.

Hi, Always good for people to share experience and skills, maybe Christian meant that dragging knuckles for beginners who do not have conditioned hands can cause damage to the skin and cause tears which can take weeks to heal and slow training. I know you were using leather / synthetic leather bags but doing that on hessian / canvas bags will cause damage. Nice video tho. Dave

@subwoofer6726 7 жыл бұрын
Ben1c1o5 Actually no that's a loosely based answer. So before YOU start correcting people, you might want to expand on your homework before you end up eating your word like you will now. A quick Bing or Google search will reveal Ving Tsun is just a mere romanization of Wing Chun, all due to some pf the dialects of China. If you take a look at Wayne Belonoha's " Wing Chun Compendium" first volume, the same matter is restated. What IS modified is some grandmasters changed the named to distinguish their lines and due to some incorperations of their own interpretations.
