GOOD DESIGN STARTS WITH GOOD DESIGN RESEARCH
Whether you are designing a physical product, a service, a process or any type of user experience, you need to do user research. (Or you don’t NEED to - only if you want to save time, money, resources and the potential backlash that will come from poor design).
If you are new to all these terms, are starting out in your UX endeavors or just want to brush up on your knowledge, let me do a short definition of what I mean by DESIGN and UX/DESIGN RESEARCH.
DESIGN can be defined as any object, product, system or service developed by a human. Examples are the chair you’re sitting on, the app you use to track your pregnancy, the playground your nieces and nephews are playing on, the process of applying for a job, the way you get help when your car is broken down.
More than just being a result, design is also the very act of creating something. Design is therefore both a noun and a verb.
And that leads us to another point about design: it is a course of action aimed at changing existing situations into preferred ones (Simon 1982).
That is, the point of any design is to change something in a given context.
Now then, UX/DESIGN RESEARCH is aimed at really understanding that context before you start designing for making a change in that context.
That means that you’re going to identify the meanings, the actions, the people and non-human factors constituting this context.

🤓 This channel is created for students, qualitative researchers, people who work with or are interested in human insights. Whether you are looking for how to do qualitative analysis as well as research methods like semi-structured interviews and participant observation or you are here to get insights about user experience and social phenomena, I hope you find value in the videos. I am always open to new ideas and would love to hear from you - whether that be feedback or questions, I can help you with.
👩🏻‍🎓 I have a Bachelor degree in Anthropology and a Master degree in Experience Economy - both from Aarhus University, Denmark. I’m absolutely in love with the social sciences and humanities! I’m especially curious about how meanings are continuously created through our interactions with the world and how designs (services, products, processes) influence how we relate to ourselves and each other.
