1) I think if it's a lattice translation then there would be no change in sequence (i.e. it continues to be ABCABC after lattice translation that is what the definition says)

In lattice translation, if we shift a vector from one point to another, we get the exact same lattice but here due to stacking fault of ABCABC type, we also get a HCP type structure (i.e. ABAB), hence if we translate a vector, we won't get the exact same lattice, that is why non-lattice translation term has been used. Please correct me if I am wrong sir ! 🙂

Is stacking fault takes place in close packed structure only
@namanjain4870
@namanjain4870 2 жыл бұрын
@@letslearnmechanicalengineering No, stacking fault can happen in a BCC crystal too. I googled and found - A stacking fault is just an interruption of the regular stacking sequence of a crystal. If there were stacking fault in BCC, you would see atom layer right above or below another layer rather than in the valley positions. Such arrangement costs a lot of energy to form and is thus very unstable and rare. But yes, there are occasional experimental observation on this.

@Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering Since, ccp is having fcc lattice. In the given example c plane was missing. Then take a corner as A. And 2 triangular plane (111) as B next to A, and then C (111) next to B. If C plane is missing, then every atom of C plane lies in [110], [101] ,[011],[1 1/2 1/2], [1/2 1 1/2] and [1/2 1/2 1] , _when we take (A before B) as origin_ . Then the question is about the *translation vector* . It means in which direction I should shift my A plane to get superimpose of A at C. Also you can say that, in which direction I should move the atoms of A planes to get the same atom at C. *Then the answer would be .* That's what I think, but I need your reply to confirm my answer.

1. If it were a lattice translation, it would give the same sequence again (ABCABC), but here after translation, the sequence is changed. So it is not a lattice translation.

1) In the ABCABC stacking, each atom is a lattice point, thereby giving us the FCC lattice, but due to stacking fault, as soon as the stacking changes to ABABAB the crystal changes to HCP where the atom at B layer is not the part of the lattice, therefore, the translation associated to stacking fault cannot be lattice translation. 2) All the layers are part of the family of planes {111}, thereby the translational vector of stacking fault is in

Prof. Prasad: First of all thank you for such amazing lectures, I learnt a lot and I really appreciate it. I have the following question, could you please help me out : I have a hard time understanding the connection between a partial dislocation and stacking fault. I am able to visualize the stacking fault via the translation of atoms(from C to A), but how can I imagine the motion of a dislocation line in the creation of a stacking fault ?

1) the the abc abc crystal structure is a fcc structure where the a resembles corner atom b and c plane resembles the (111)plane , hence the lattice translation vector for the same should be [111], and sir as the translation is along the body diagonal where there is no lattice point present hence it must be a non lattice translation sir please do respond , if my answers are correct or not??
@rajeshprasad101
@rajeshprasad101 4 жыл бұрын
The translation associated with the stacking fault lies in the fault plane, here (111) plane and not perpendicular to it. Thus the fault translation is not [111] which is perpendicular to (111). The translation vector of the fault will take position A to B in ABCABC sequence. This translation can be shown to be 1/6[11-2], or other equivalent vectors, which is not a lattice translation.

If you draw a vector starting from a lattice point but ending at an arbitrary point (i.e, not a lattice point) then it is a non-lattice translation. So if you draw a vector from a corner to a centre of a face in a BCC lattice it will be a non-lattice translation.
