Sir, how to calculate surface energy per unit area for a plane in a crystal using that formula, let's say for BCC Crystal (110) plane? I'm getting 5 Dangling bonds...

sir if the atoms require energy to break the bonds , the bonds are already broken so the energy is dissipated . so why again the atoms will have the extra energy sir ??
@introductiontomaterialsscience
@introductiontomaterialsscience 4 жыл бұрын
The energy spent in breaking the bond gets stored in the surface atoms. So the energy of surface atoms is higher compared to that of inside atoms. You can look at it another way also. Formation of each bond lowers the energy of the system. Since surface atoms have less number of bonds their energy is higher.

@@introductiontomaterialsscience Sir my query is same, the energy is utilized to break the bonds of two surfaces which were joined previously so how that energy is stored in surface atoms again.

@@introductiontomaterialsscience I understood most of your content, you explained each and every point very well, but this is a little bit confusing.

@@openargument5285 All I can do is to repeat what I have already said. An atom at the surface has a lesser number of bonds as compared to an inside atom. Thus the surface atom is at a higher energy level than the inside atom. This additional energy can be thought of as the surface energy per atom.

sir is this formula applicable for polycrystalline crystals as well?

No, in a polycrystalline sample, different grains will expose different free surfaces.
