This video presents the Introductory lecture by Paul Michael Taylor, for the curatorial seminar series held in December 2022 in Jakarta, Pontianak, and Palangkaraya, Indonesia. The lecture, "Representing Cultures in Museums and 'Cultural Centers'", looks at the history of our museums and how cultural traditions have been represented in various types of museums from the Renaissance to the present -- with special attention to the ways Indonesian material culture has been represented in museums over time.
This Indonesian curatorial workshop was held first at the Museum Tekstil (Textile Museum) in Jakarta (Dec. 13, 2022), then at the Provincial Museum of Kalimantan Barat (West Kalimantan / Borneo) in Pontianak on Dec. 17, 2022, then at the Museum Balanga in Palangkaraya, Kalimantan Tengah (Central Kalimantan / Borneo) on Dec. 21, 2022. Paul Taylor's introductory video provides a brief overview of major trends in the history of museums as they affect curatorship today, and also introduces Dr. Robert Pontsioen who was present at all three venues to deliver all the other curatorial seminar components in person.
The curatorial seminar was paired with another seminar on conservation in each of the three venues, all organized jointly by the Tracing Patterns Foundation (Berkeley, California) and the Asian Cultural History Program of the Smithsonian Institution, with the support of the U.S. Embassy Jakarta, working with the three Indonesian museum partners hosting the seminars.
