Most Romanian’s speak English because after the communist regime fell all movies and music imported where from the USA and they were never dubbed. We used subtitles in Romanian for movies even to this day. Compared to other countries that used to watch dubbed movies in their own language. It’s still hurts my brain to comprehend that most italians, spanish or german people never heard the real voices of actors like Sylvester Stalone, Leonardo did Caprio or even Margot Robbie. Another important fact is that we had to use all our devices like computers or phones in English because the romanian language option appeared pretty recent. There is a downside to this, if you give a phone to use and the language is set to Romanian I simply can’t use it and even to this day despite being fluent in English, every time I watch a movie I need to read the subtitles even though I use the English subtitles I need to use it to feel engaged with the movie. 😅

I think it’s enough for now and today it’s so easy to find a lot more by yourself with almost the most speedy internet that you have in Romania 😉😊 You can also can try to talk with real people from there and ask their opinion… Anyway I wish you to have only good experiences and to fully enjoy your trip…

Hot soup during winter will keep your body warm. It is not really something to have during summer, but it is good anyways. Hot soups in Romania are mostly for winter days, when you are going out to temperatures below freezing. The alcohol shoots are useful during winter as well, makes your blood pump up like crazy. Aside from that, garlic keeps some viruses away(you know the story of garlic versus vampires). During winter garlic is quite useful over there(natural shield against flu)

I wonder what could be so awful for a tourist. You have a nice room, usually in the center city, you don't have to use public transportation during rush hours to get to work, you're basically just chillin'. And for that you have lots and lots of theaters, parks, restaurants, clubs. More trees than in western city, better internet, better quality of food, better people, lower crime rate, better literacy, different architecture styles, better public transportation. Of course, you you want to escape a big vibrant city, you could go to smaller, provincial cities. There life is much, much slower, but also the downside of the number of anything. Less clubs, restaurants, parks, people, public transportation if any, and so on. Basically Bucharest is about 10 provincial cities put together.

Hey, Sly! A little bit of info on the internet infrastructure. The internet is so cheap and fast because at first it was not regulated by the government and the infrastructure in Bucharest was built by enthusiasts. You would see LAN cables hanging all over the buildings. All this because people were hungry for information after having lived through a communist regime. I was one of those that installed internet in the early days. Besides internet being unregulated at first, we also skipped copper based tech and went directly to cable, fiber and DSL.

When talking about "soups", in Romania we actualy have 2 main types: Soups, wich are usualy light, can be sweet or sour and depending from wich part of the country they originated from, can also be a bit spicy. As a few examples, your clasic tomato soup, or chicken soup or mushroom cream soup. The second kind are labeled as broths in the clasic english cuisine. These usualy have a meat broth as base, contain a few different types of veggies and spices and are called "ciorba de _____" ( depending on what the main ingredient is ). A popular example wich tastes realy good, if prepared corectly, is called "ciorba a la grec", wich translates into "greek style broth" ( the second one you tried out ). Or the traditional "ciorba de burta", wich translates into "belly broth" ( the first serving you had, the one with the pepper).

Words don't translate directly from English to Romanian, Romanian/English. It's what they call in linguistics " false friends" or false cognates.( according to Wikipedia: In linguistics, a false friend is a word in a different language that looks or sounds similar to a word in a given language, but differs significantly in meaning.) "Belly broth" is called "tripe soup" in english. Also what they call broth, is what they call in romanian "zeama" or bulion (ori supa). Ciorba in english is Soup. It's just a little backwards between the two languages, which can be a little confusing :)

The Jews in Romania do not live in groups and are generally integrated into the general population, so you will never realize that they are Jews, if they do not tell you, or by name. If it carries on like that soon Romania will have mass migrations into the country. And I also strongly believe that in 10 years Eastern Europe will overcome Western Europe if things are continuing same way!

Sly, you avoided all the things worthy of admiring in Bucharest, a lot of interesting and beautiful places, just to prove at any cost that the city is a slum?!?? You filmed on Calea Victoriei, heading straight to the Athenaeum, the Royal Palace (today the Art Museum), to an airy and beautiful area. But you abruptly cut the movie, without explanation, continuing with a marginal and unimportant neighborhood, old and decrepit. I am beginning to think that you are traveling this part of Europe with the intention of discrediting it, not for real tourism and the pleasure of discovering new cultures...

Shengen applies only for airports since March 2024, not for road transport and it will not change soon. There is plenty of variety in Bucharest, but it suck too live mainly because of the clutter and air pollution. During the school break the traffic should be much better. Cities in Transylvania or the north are quite more interesting I would say, but the real charm of Romania is its outdoors, mainly the Carpathians and the Danube Delta. Regarding the prices : for restaurants it went up at least 30% in the last 4-5 years, because there is demand.
