Life does not often give you the opportunity to pick and chose when you go. Now that I'm retired and can go when I want, I go early and watch the sunrise and enjoy the day that's been given to me.

Heck yea well said. I started going early-early because of responsibilities of family and just life. I could get out before sunrise have a “full” day of fishing and be back home before 1pm. Amen to that! Every time I try to launch "On Time" and not early I get a line of guys that have no clue how to stage their boat before the ramp, then they gotta go hold their wife's purse with their limp wrist for them while taking forever talking with everyone around them and taking up the entire launch ramp for 2hrs taking 63 tries to eventually put the boat in the water sideways leaving no room for anyone else. After they get the boat in the water they leave their vehicle and boat in the way for another 2hrs trying to load their wife's braw straps in the boat all while still limp wresting her purse and finally starting the boat, but then they leave the boat in the middle of the dang launch area still blocking everyone to go park the car and apparently go get the rest of their wife's purses from the store and limp wrest them as well, because it takes them another 2hr's to get back and by the time they get all loaded up and out of the way another 2hr's go by and now after 8hrs have passed and we have 2 more "Manly Purse holders!" still ahead of us, so at this point I give up and go home....

Very true. But on my home waters the barefoot skiers get out on their wake boats right about then. Because the other boats make it difficult later on. And the boat wake bite doesn't start until afternoon. As obnoxious as the barefoot guys are. They are more respectful of the rules and fishermen than jet skiers and the rest of the pleasure boats

No I won’t stop getting up early to fish. Fishing for me is more than just the “catch”. I do it for the full experience. I love to watch the sun come up over the water. The serenity of it all. Deer coming down to drink. The beaver and otters playing in the morning. I’m surprised Randy you’d use that on your thumbnail. You of all people I would think you’d understand. And yes I’m not an idiot. You are talking about the most productive time to fish. Most of the fish I catch are caught between 930 and 1130. I don't care what the study says either. Summer bass fishing is way better in morning and sunset. Everyone knows that. Anyone that says otherwise is to lazy to get up early and stay late. 2 exceptions is early in the year and late in fall where alot of better bites happen mid day. Another exception can vary of what kind of cover is dominant on an individual lake that majority of the anglers target. If its docks or Lilly pads, bull rushes, rice weeds, flipping mats...Everyone knows this bite gets better in the sun heat of the day..but I also have record days early in the mornings throwing out out some kind of cast and retrieve bait out in front of the cover before the bass go to there cover

it all depends on the light... as a scuba diver who has dove at night I can tell you the bass sleep at night... you can sneak up on them and pet them if you wanted... but put light into the darkness and fish activity can happen... like when you fish for crappy at night with lights... my experience for striped bass is they like to eat around 10 in the morning and around 3 in the afternoon.... the birds will show you the times...

I pretty much fish rivers for smallmouth. I’ve always had the best luck from mid spring to late summer in the 3 o’clock pm to 7 o’clock pm period. I found the same as you about the early morning top water bite, it’s such a small window. But the late afternoon window is longer. Early fall can be anytime of day for me. In the end it’s a different species and different habitat.

Great Video as always, But I notice that you left out one thing, that is Pressure. being someone who fishes in the Northeast from shore and kayak mostly, I found that I would catch more fish earlier in the day on pressured lakes and Ponds than I would during the middle of the day. I found that my number of fish was less during the middle of the day, when most jet and water skiers were on the water, than those few hours just before sunrise and active on the water was minimum. I believe that bodies of waters that are less than 1000 acres with heavy water sport activities, are better fish earlier in the morning and late at night, rather than mid-day.

I live in a mountainous area. When the wind blows, stay home, drink coffee. The bite will quit any time the wind gets up. It doesn't matter the time of day. Nightime is good if it's quiet. Daytime is good, if the prevailing wind stays under 5 mph. Not much else matters, they sulk when the wind blows.

Randy, THANK YOU, SIR! I'm a 60 year old, 5th generation native plumber from Clearwater, Fl. My specialty, of course, is saltwater, and my favorite quarry is BIG inshore gamefish. Mainly Tarpon, Snook, and Redfish. However, being in the plumbing trade since 1980 it, has taken a SERIOUS toll on my body (mostly lower back, and BOTH of my knees have been replaced! That said, it's extremely painful for me to get in a boat, especially on saltwater! So now, I'm learning bank fishing for bass on ultra light equipment. I just can't ski bass across the surface, but I understand why you tournament guys do it. I have learned that bass are amazing fighters, if you just give them a half a chance! Picture this! I'm at a serious disadvantage, because if anyone runs into me bass fishing, I'll be the guy sitting on my walker, on a steep bank, wearing cleats to keep me from rolling into the drink! My point is, while I have watched tons of bass videos. You just taught me something that I haven't marked off yet! So I subscribed to your channel as I'm anxious to find out what else I can learn from you! I'm sorry this was so long, but let me finish with a question. Anyone, please feel free to answer. Florida ponds generally have pretty good visibility. What is a good color to start with in high visibility ponds? Or should I ask what determines the right color to start with in high vis, Florida ponds? It may be worth noting that I only started bass fishing in June 2023, and so far my top bait that has caught the most fish, (and it's not even close), is a blue and white and clear, Shimano World Minnow Flash Boost Stick Bait. In fact, I just retired my first one because it was so beat up that it was hard to see the flashing foil anymore! If you don't have some, get at least one!

I agree 100%! I have been getting up at 4:30 - 5:00am to get to the lake at sunrise. I fish the shallows all morning and have never caught fish until around 9:00 - 10:00am. I think the fish come out of the flats or mid depths to get into shallows for shade. My best fish have been caught under overhanging structure on the shore line. During the spawn, I have found fish on sunny shore lines because I think the eggs need heat to hatch. So bass protecting nests can be found there. Ive been bass fishing for 60 years and the get up early morning or late evening habit has been drilled into my head. I don't believe the early morning myth anymore, but there is something to late evening fishing. Thats just my experience. Thanks for your insight.

So from what im reading in the comments, getting up really early isn't necessarily to improve your catch rate but instead for the serenity that the experience of sunrise brings. However, if you don't get there at that time, dont fret, you can still cast a line and have a great chance at catching fish if its later in the morning/day. Thank you for the tips!

Morning is best especially in the streams and rivers because you get to the holes before others fish them not necessarily because fish are feeding at that time. You definitely catch more fish if others have not hit that hole in the last few hours and usually mornings guarantee that.

A guy once told me that 90% of the fish are in 10% of the lake. You just have to find the fish. Another seasoned tournament bass fisherman told me to match the color of the bottom if using plastic worms, jigs, etc... Then a lake guide told me to find the channels like old creek beds. It's the highway for the fish. In the mornings they move to shallows but as that sun rises they move deeper to the channels. All three were correct as I have had success testing each piece of advice. Now that I fish almost exclusively in saltwater, fish are everywhere. I just throw out a chumbag. It's like ruining the dinner bell! 😄 Some of the same rules apply for freshwater but there are a lot more rules. Tides, wind, weather, current.....My favorite is Snook fishing because they act a lot like Bass. The basic rule is topwater lures morning and evening because of the sun. I adopted this years ago because I'm not a morning person. I work nights and sleep late, so I don't start fishing until like 3 in the afternoon and I still catch fish. Not fishing in the morning hasn't hindered me.

Well you got one thing correct, bass ARE noctornal night is best from late spring to early fall. Of course depending what part of the country these times of the year will be variable, but night is best from MY experence in oklahoma.😊

Did a lot of Winter Steelhead fishing some years ago. Worked swing shift and river was 17 miles from work. Guys I worked with always wanted to be there first thing in the morning. That made for a very long day and work till 11 pm. I finally decided I would go myself and when I was ready in the morning. What I noticed was a lot of the first of the morning people were already gone. I had stretches of the river I could walk and try different spots working down river and then back up river. I almost always got one or two Steelhead.

In the winter fish seem to wait for the warmest time of the day, but in summer I usually find the bite starts somewhere between 6:45 and 7:15.

Love my fishing. My #1 reasons for getting up early. To evade people... on the road, station, stores, lakes and rivers, UFO's, the stillness of the air and water and of course the one -on one with the fishes. #2 reasons: Wife and kids yelling, traffic, angry drivers, warm sun.

My great uncle use to fish topwater an hour or 2 before daylight and would be leaving the lake when guys were coming out !! And he had a stringer full during the depression!!

Top water fishing at night with a lantern on the front of the boat is epic fun. The Bass are active and aggressive. Works especially well on lakes with heavy traffic during the day, jet skis, pontoons etc.

Bass fishing😂. I remember getting a friend, who was a bass fisherman, into a steelhead. Did the Missouri bass fishing technique and grabbed the reel when the steelie hit. They stood there with their mouth agape and wondered how the leader broke so fast. Bass😂. Salmonids rock!

My great uncle Jack loved to fish at sundown, he used to call it the "witching" hour... I think he liked going out in the boat with his buddy for catfish , but liked drinking beer while doing a little fishing.

My 11-year-old son was fishing a local reservoir trying to catch these huge bass that he would see swimming around. Everybody else was trying for years and years. There was the mother of mother swimming and would never buy anything so I told my son because that fish is pressured all day long until dark. If you get there first thing in the morning before it's even light and you're there right at daybreak and cast right into where you know he is you will get him. Sure enough I got a call. I have never heard a boy. More excited and more proud. He had just landed the record largemouth bass for greenhorn reservoir, a 14 lb hog. The fish of a lifetime for sure, especially for an 11-year-old. My personal best wasn't eight and a half pound largemouth. Anyway, the kid never gave up. He changed it up and he got up early. It's just so beautiful in the morning

Being a Paramedic I am up all night almost every shift and our shifts start at 6 so I am up at 4 AM to get ready for work. So I am not getting up on my days off at 4 or 5 to go fishing. I sleep till 7 or 8 and still catch plenty of fish all day. Great video Randy
