Funny story... my late friend and fishing buddie, Tony, a very slim 6'10" man had a unique casting method. He used his entire arm, to the shoulder, to cast. You knew who was on the lake by the "WHOSH" every time he made a cast! I always teased him on a dead calm morning of warning the fish we were there! Needless to say, he made tremendous long casts BUT he never knew where they were going! Regardless, he was an excellent bass fisherman! We lost Tony five years ago and I dearly miss hearing the sound of his rod breaking the sound barrier!

I know a few people like that I’m a above average caster myself. But when I brake out the 8’rod and and XD10 I can dump a spool on a 200-300 size reel. But I put everything into and it’s like that. 🙏🏼 don’t get in to big of a hurry your buddy will there waiting on you. So try to make him wait as long as you can 😂😂 brother 🙏🏼I don’t think he’ll mind.

I'm sure he won't mind if I hang around longer. I know he is on his favorite lake doing what he loves! I am blessed at 77 to still be able to put foam on the lakes! Thank you for the kind words!

Now that I am around 60 I do have to put a little bit of elbow behind a long cast, but for short accurate placement you are right on! Thank you for sharing!

First, id like to tell you how helpful your videos are to me, a new, more serious fisherman. I bought my first baitcaster over the winter, and have had just a few days off where I could practice casting. I’ve just started to get “decent” at the roll cast. I’m not gonna even go near water with the thing until I feel comfortable casting. Lol. Thanks again for all you do!

This is exactly what I was taught in hockey, and have applied to casting my whole life. Visualize the whole cast and use your wrist. I was a deadly shot too. Played up through Junior (semi-pro) here in Canada, until I started my Saltwater fishing charter in 2001 after buying a 23’ Mako with money I had saved. Before I knew it I had 6 total boats, 11 employees and completely booked from Late May until October for Bluefin (only one license) Striper, skipjack, Yellowfin, mackerels and the odd catch and release shark. My personal fishing boats are now a 33 Regulator with dual 300 saltwater Evinrudes, and a Skeeter FXR21 Apex, and I mostly run the business from afar now that I can legally delegate my Tuna Licence to one specific employee, I only have to be there if we decide to actually take a Tuna, and our licenses only allow us to keep one per year. The rest of the season is catch and release. If my Son wants it, I plan to give it to him when he’s of age in two years, if he doesn’t go to college to fish through the tournament system. Then I’ll wait till he’s done. Man, that went places I didn’t expect when I started typing. Not sure why, but there it is. Anyone wants a great saltwater charter in Eastern Canada, this guy! Mostly booked a year ahead though, for two charters a day at 250$/head. 2000$ for tuna, average 4 people per charter. Damn glad I didn’t go to college. 42 and all I need to do is fish and watch videos about fishing. My wife is the genius behind the background stuff. Good, intelligent Egyptian girl.

First off im a lefty,learning to roll cast,skip forward, and back hand, bomb cast , pitch scissor flip, punch, has helped me get fish.without these skills fishing was alot harder, and limited me to spin reel fishing as my strong point.i still use a spin rig in creeks,and ponds, but ive gotten so much better with a baitcaster. Id force myself to use it bank fishing, and up close till i could get my baits where i wanted them to go,and watched fish the moment, Johnny Shults, his video helped me with the proper ergonomics, and then i adapted it to left handed.i still could learn to cast right handed, but i have a disabled finger that is fine to reel, but not so good for the baitcaster .so i sold my right hand reel, and i only fish what works for my disability.

it’s so crazy how casting is the MAIN thing above all else in fly fishing but it’s the last thing we think about in bass fishing other than line size and lure weight distance maximizing

I consider myself a good caster, maybe not great but good. One thing that challenges me though is casting in pretty strong winds. When the wind is strong enough to move a crank bait several feet and or loop your line over obstacles before you can tighten up it drives me crazy. Would like for you to do a supplement video to this one about casting in wind. I do to try to fish with the wind as you suggest but that’s just not possible with every cast or situation.

Good vid. When I used to shoot pool, I could tell right away if someone was good, just by the way the stroked the cue. Sounds like the same theory. Mechanics is critical,

*As a musician there's an old saying. "If you can't play it slow, you can't play it fast".* At my age, you learn that the fundamentals of ANY profession are the most important. If you don't get the fundamentals down, then nothing else matters, no matter what you're doing. Expert casters ALWAYS catch fish... I kinda wish Randy would've given a fundamental "how-to" on setting up bait-casters to be their most efficient (including amount of line on the reel), given that if that's not right, then your casting technique is all but pointless.* But, these types of videos are gold, and exactly what I signed up to hear. I'd love to see an on the water demonstration on how to use the trolling motor (speed, direction of approach, etc..) when working an area. That's another artform, the pro's do incredibly well. That would be a tough one to film, but I'd still love to see a pro's approach to this, because you never see how they're manipulating the TM on TV/videos.* Great video!

@@Nate_Higgins It’s a lot more common than I thought. Another favorite of mine is Steve Fisher (I believe that’s his name) He has some really intuitive, and relatable fishing videos, as well. He’s a trumpet player in his local symphony. 👍

This is something I just started practicing. I fish from a kayak and I don’t stand a lot because I mostly river fish for smallmouth so last weekend I put my kayak in my back yard and sat down and started practicing from a seated position. I still have a lot of practice to do but it is crucial in my opinion to catching more bass. Do you have a weight that you recommend starting with for practice? I fish a lot of finesse jigs, lighter weight stuff but I am also still new to baitcasters. I’ve only been using them for about a year now. I have all diawa reels.

You didn't mention using two hands to cast. I use both hands even on those short handle pistol grips. It helps with accuracy and is easier on your wrist.

As far as the rod rating, is there an exception when it comes to jerkbaits? I know you’ve mentioned numerous times that you use the Whipsnake as your primary jerkin rod, which has a max lure rating of 3/8oz. While a standard 110 weighs 1/2oz. Been meaning to ask you this for some time now. Thanks

Watch Chris Lanes talk on FFS. Sounds like he knows the right answer, but to afraid of "Big Money" to take a stance. Like said deep down here knows this is crazy to allow in professional fishing... Anywhere any tourney!
