In today's tennis coaching session, I play points with my student Shamir who had to take a year off because of a foot injury. His NTRP rating dropped to 4.0.

Yeah, quite irritating, I can understand when it's an important point or after a few errors to cheer themselves up but every single point, even 30-15 in the first game. I don't think they are mentally focused in their matches, guys like Shapo complaining on every point he loses and going crazy with a winner... I'm nobody but in my humble opinion I don't think that helps. 50 points won you are Santa and 50 points lost you are the Grinch 🤷🏽‍♂️

I am guessing that Shamir is about the level of most people who watch these videos. That’s why they are so popular. And finally, here is a true 3.5 player (at this moment), which is refreshing to see unlike some hyper-inflated self rated people.

This was a great video for me. I started playing in leagues and practicing a lot last summer after playing very rarely over 25 years. I keep thinking I need to be able to hit aggressively every time in order to jump from 3.5 to 4.0. After seeing this, I understand I should be playing way more maintenance balls and being patient. My consistency is not good enough to play super agressive. I need to play with the skills I have now and not the style I wish I had.

Learned a lot from Nicos commentary. A treasure trove for the 3.0 - 4.5 players...and that's the majority one sees at the local public courts. And such a nice student in Shamir..he has an enquiring mind about the game.

I often see the KZbin short you posted, Nik, where you're correcting Shamir's low, short ball technique - such a nasty comment section on that one, calling you "aggressive" and that you speak to Shamir "like a child." To see Shamir hug you unprompted at 21:25 is the ultimate proof of how wrong those people are. Proud to see this.

Shamir most of the time puts the ball out wide or into the net. He really needs punishment. Maybe the system I created for myself long ago works for him, it worked like this: if I hit even one ball out wide or into the net I will be a chihuahua till the next session. If I do not miss a single ball during this session then I am a bold and smart German Shepherd. He can of course choose what creatures look more rewarding or punishing to him. The important thing is that he has reached the level that must be ashamed of missing too many easy balls.
