I was a high school teacher and I always used to ask kids of colour "Are you indigenous?" If they said yeah then I would ask "do you know where your people are from?" Then I would ask "do you know the name of the tribe?" I was sincerely interested to see if they were learning about their own culture and I was interested in indigenous culture too. Still am. . The kids were always good about it and always answered me if they could.

@@mditt7 I think that's different to what she was asked, they likely assumed she was foreign, not First Nations. Either that, or she thought it was a bit intrusive for a first meeting. Especially if they weren't offering the same kind of information.

Not from Australia myself, here but can't help wondering: I know "Where are you from" is an offensive question, assuming people of other than the most typical colour in a country must be foreigners. But, in Australia, if anyone should ask that question, (I know, they shouldn't but say, IF) shouldn't it be people of aboriginal descent asking everyone else? I mean, okay, I heard that aboriginals supposedly took over/conquered the land from someone else 40.000 years ago or something, but then they have been there for about 39.600 years before everyone else started arriving, in comparison quite recently? So the answer would be "From here. Where are YOU from-from?" And the follow-up question would be "What kind of crime runs in your family?" assuming that if they are not of aboriginal descent, you must have been sent to Australia as punishment for some crime. (And I know, the crime was often "being very poor in England", but if we are asking unreasonable questions, let's just get on with it).

As a Caucasian born in Australia I wish I could claim this kind of thing doesn't happen, but then I've met a lot of white Australians, so I can't. The therapist being so clueless is similar to what I have heard whitefellas say when talking about First Nations peoples. Far too true 😅

But its different when you're a Black fella. They are seen differently than Indigenous peoples. They are Indigenous too, but Black, and even though some are mixed with the white people. They still refer to themselves as Aboriginal people. I don't think Indigenous people who live on the reservations in America would have white therapists. I think its a bad idea. I am a Black American, I had a white therapist it was not a good idea. I worked for a Black therapist. She was more understanding of rhe Black and minority communities.

@@pauljordan4452 Nice that someone was a therapist and not this insensitive. But you can hear from reactions that some people have really experienced this. And also, even if she wasn't *this* offensive, there is probably a good deal of micro aggressions that she hasn't recognized for what they are. I myself has only bit by bit discovered some of the typical micro aggressions that some groups are exposed to. And as a women, there are some similar experiences where a man might say that "Don't you think he was just paying you a compliment?" and we just know .... "[sigh] No."
