Tuna Crabs, AKA Red Pelagic Crabs invade the Redondo Submarine Canyon. I've been diving this location for years and have never seen anything like this. Epic Fun!

7/9/19: I dove this location recently to check on the invasion status and the Pleuroncodes planipes also called tuna crabs or pelagic red crab were completely gone. So, it sounds like all you hungry folks may be out of luck!

Hi, this is a very interesting video! I have a question: did you film this at night or during daylight hours? I am asking because I saw these crabs in San Diego but the water was so murky in the first 80 feet that in the bottom it looked like a night diving. I wonder if the crabs behave differently during night dives. Thank you!

Wow!! I've never heard of Tuna Crabs. I live in NY and I guess it would be too cold here for them to thrive unless during our summer seasons which is now. They look like a lobster and crab mated and they are the offspring lol. Pretty cool how they all just bunch together. I wonder if they're edible?

I grew up in the South Bay (Carson/Torrance). We always went to Redondo Beach Ave C to cruise and swim, etc. Also went there to hunt ‘tuna’. I also caught ‘crabs’ there...thanks to penicillin got cured up!!!...oh wait, this isn’t that type of vid...🤭🤣🤣🤣

This is not a problem. This is the solution of our problem. These crabs are delicious. They are extremely expensive in Europe and Asia. I had been fishing of Redondo for many years as a young man. They used to have barges of the shore for fishing. None exists today along the entire coast of California because it is depleted. Large fishing boats with miles long net scooping all bait fishes to make fertilizer. We do not see them. I would not call this an invasion but rather an invitation. I guess people are now so used to see depleted ocean and overpopulated world. I wish they invade my swimming pool. I already put out a big sign "WELCOME" and a small red carpet for respect. Thanks for putting this video, the new delicious crabs will be soon exterminated!
