Currently locked in mortal combat with this hideous, beautiful plant. Just came into my yard a couple years ago and is aggressively trying to take over everywhere. Thank you all for the tips!

Bellflower will spread so aggressively that the only real way to control it is to exhaust the root system. It will require multiple years of aggressive weeding. Because the root system is so robust, it is imperative that you remove foliage before the root system can recover the energy it spent producing the sprout. Even herbicides aren't a perfect solution, as I have found that the root system is so robust that the foliage cannot absorb enough herbicide in a single application to kill the plant. It can take several applications, across multiple years to kill the plant. If you are controlling it aggressively, I have heard that the root system can go dormant and "skip a year", returning 2-3 years later after you think the job is done. If you want to use herbicides to control bellflower, don't bother with 2,4-D: it won't work. Dicamba and Triclopyr are somewhat effective, but Clopyralid is apparently the herbicide of choice for greenhouses and nurseries (though Clopyralid is harder to find in consumer herbicides). Glyphosate will also work, but it is nonselective - and you have to remember that you will likely need to be persistent with making multiple applications. Remember that selective herbicides are not completely harmless to your lawn - you are generally only supposed to apply selective herbicides to your lawn once or twice a year. So spot treatment will be critical. Good luck with your fight, it will probably feel like a losing battle, but with diligence it CAN be done. I have successfully removed most of it from my flower garden - now I just need to be hyper vigilant for the foliage that will come up from the roots that were too close to my desirable plants to dig up. Each year, there should be less and less and with persistence it will hopefully be gone entirely.

Thanks for the information! I’m anxiously awaiting to see what comes up this year. I’m considering covering the whole area with dark tarps for a couple of years to see if that suppresses them.

Omg I just discovered this all over my yard, intermingled all over my garden bed intertwined with the plants! I think I’m screwed because there’s no way I can dig these up without destroying the entire garden. Thank you for the video, even if the news for me is bleak! 😅 I’m in QC too by the way ;)

Another great video. Looks like you need to look to chemicals against the onslaught. I hope lawnmower man makes another cameo in future videos.

John Ott Thanks! The only chemical that works is illegal in Canada. Hopefully this way will work.

I agree with dora59 the struggle is real! Also it is strangling out all of my intentional perennials. Can I salvage them by moving them to a new location and then digging out where the bluebell is? ….. or will I be moving bluebell to a new location by moving the surviving perenials?…..

Thank you! I have some in one of my plant beds and I’ve been trying to figure out how to get rid of them for good!! Terrible creatures!!

They ARE coming up again this year, but MUCH fewer. I'm just going to rip off the leaves as I se them poke out of the ground as I don't have the energy to dig again!

If you have nothing else growing there, black plastic the area for two years after you have dug up as much as you can. I'm having to do that for quack grass and common bugloss. I'm having to do the "weaker and weaker" with Rush Skeletonweed. Killing weeds with black plastic is fabulous. The seeds remain dormant for eons, but all you have to do is till, water, put the plastic back down to solarize (cook) them. Mine is in-lawn thanks to cruddy owners around me.

OmG !!! where are you in Canada? I am in eastern Toronto area, and started last year or so I started noticed these weeds in my flower bed. I pulled them out and also saw them all over my hood! I never let them grow tall so never get to see them bloom. Anyways, this spring they made a Big Come Back: so more work to do: Keep Pulling !

Nightmare! Yup I can see the little leaves now in my garden again so I gotta get out there are start pulling. I live in Western Quebec. Lots around here too. ☹️

I like those purple bellflowers. Can you tell me where to get those? Thank you
@lifeinseason3 жыл бұрын
In Canada, they are listed as a noxious weed so I don't think you can buy them. You may be able to find other types of less aggressive CAMPANULA plants at a garden center.
