The Leucaena is a species of the Legume family native to the South of Mexico, it was brought to Colombia at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th with the purpose of supplementing protein for cattle, but its high reproductive capacity in the wild, has turned it into a serious danger for the local flora.
Leucaena is a genus of about 24 species of trees and shrubs, distributed from Texas in the United States to Peru and Paraguay. It belongs to the Mimosoideae subfamily of the Fabaceae legume family.
Some species (such as Leucaena leucocephala) have edible fruits and seeds, used in animal feed, in green manures, soil conservation, also its seeds may be used for necklaces. An area of 120 km² is planted as a source of vegetable fuel oil with a production of 1 million barrels of oil/year. It also serves as an anthelmintic in Sumatra, Indonesia.
Leucaena esculenta or guaje in Mexico is eaten with salt. Other species of the genus have the mimosine alkaloid that causes hair loss, infertility, in some animals.
