Just finished our project on a 150 gal unit. followed your steps , but being our unit was heavily scratched we used the #3. We still have a few scratches visible as they were quite deep but being the unit was free ( well we had to haul it away and rebuild the stand as it was rotting in several spots clean up the filters and lights) but able to do this with at about $200 with new wood, screws, glue, 1000/2000 grit sandpaper, plenty of the harbor freight towels, the polishing discs and Nexis kit. It did not include buying another sander or the kit to make strong angle joints and the paint and paint brushes for the stand. Thanks for your video, we now have a beautiful 150 gal freshwater aquarium for under $400.

Hey... I just want to really thank you. I had this tank sitting around for 10 years. Got it free because previous owner scratch and gouged the heck out of it. I did just as you suggest. Only I started with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Went all the way to 3000 grit. Then used the acrylic polish 3 and 2. Not 1. Now it looks like new. 2 days work.

Today I equipped my 1/4 HP bench grinder with ventilated cotton and yellow polishing past for polishing acrylic. After washing and drying the piece, I rubbed it against the polishing mop. I experimented different feed rates and movements. Found out that with this 6” mop wheel, it was better to apply little pressure and move the piece quite fast. Washed part again, dried and went to the soft fabric finishing mop, no paste. I found the result very good. Deep scratches and ding were removed or turned invisible. This was my first time, I found the result so good that I polished all my safety-abuses-lenses glasses. Guess I won’t be buying them anytime soon! Out of 10, I give my first try an 8.5

@@inventoryking Yes. Slowly. The 3000 grit feels less like sandpaper and more like suede! In a few more days,its water change time and if my back lets me I want to sand it as best I can 60% empty of water.

@StanTheObserver-lo8rx 4 жыл бұрын
@@inventoryking Dude,I swear,its working!..ha. That 3000 grit I hand sanded about a half hour today before my arms gave out as I drained the big tank. I could feel the "resistance" of the acrylic give way to smooth going. Ok,it's not like a drained tank buffed out..but I think It's 70% better with more next week. I will also do the outside soon. After 40 years, acrylic not only has scratches it also can get "milky" from window light UV. This is the best it's looked in decades.

Can I give you some advice seeing that I’ve wet sanded and buffed cars for a living.First off I would do it by hand don’t use a palm sander and I would use 1500 grit that’s what I use on a car and the reason I’m telling you to sand it by hand is you do it in a circular motion .My second suggestion would be getting a battery powered buffer i use a big Makita for car there a reason you want to go in a circular motion is because the buffer goes in a circular motion it’s easier to get out the scratches.by you going back-and-forth you’re putting straight line they are harder to get out and I tell you something that works good for polishing is the polish you use to clean your headlights with because it specifically made for plastic.and you can get the sandpaper that you were using from Walmart and Walmart also and the RV section has a spray on wax cleaner that works really good. I’ve never been a fan of foam buffing pads I always use a cloth bonnets because they hold the compound and it doesn’t dry out as quick this is just a little suggestion from somebody who’s buffed out many many old mustangs I probably painted 20 of them one of them ended up with one in magazine that’s my 15 minutes of fame.but trust me if you go in a circular motion It will work better.buy a battery powered Makita Or Milwaukee not a Harbor Fraight tool you’ll have more room to work with the Instead of that big drill you’re using don’t take this offensive I’m just trying to give you some tips

I appreciate your honesty at the end "Is it perfect, NO". This is not an easy procedure, and you are correct it is a time consumer. i have $100S polishing machines and compounds, 800, 1200, 1500, 2000, 3000, 5000, 10000 grit W/D sandpaper etc. and yes when I am all "done" you can still see a lot microscopic haze (not the crazing), and even buff marks from my equipment. One of these days I will try one small piece about 6"x6" and see how long that takes to polish to perfection. Otherwise, most of us will need to be satisfied with the "20ft polish", ie from 20ft away it looks perfect.

Is there anything you do to get rid of lasting chemicals before adding water and fish? Or do you want to use a carbon filter while cycling?

great video attempting on a 55 gal acrylic do you think a ryobi orbital sander will work?
@inventoryking
@inventoryking 2 жыл бұрын
Not 100% sure. Test it on the top brace or something that isn’t the viewing panel. A small spot and see how it does. If it doesn’t work it’s in a non visible place

Another cheap and easy way to remove scratches on acrylic is a heat gun... just keep the heat gun moving over the scratch and it will melt back into the panel.
