It's harder how most product is loaded onto trailers. Usually, it's one guy dropping off pallets of product that 2 or 3 guys load onto empty containers. Why? Cause it's cheaper to pay 2 or 3 guys minimum wage than to ship millions of pallets across the world.

Most companies don't ship pallets. They have a forklift drop off a pallet and 2 or 3 guys unload it onto a trailer. It's cheaper to pay minimum wage than to ship pallets worldwide. So, yeah this is actually a company taking care of its employees. Most wouldn't waste investing in a new forklift.

I used to drive OTR. All too often, the receivers would conveniently(for them) have palletizing, stacking & tie/high requirements to conform with THEIR logistical & warehousing system. Sometimes they would even require product to be restacked on their own pallets, even though it was already paletized. As a result, they would charge the shipper, broker, or -most often, the TRUCK DRIVER 're-stacking' fees and even just general 'unloading' charges that went to the receiver's CONTRACTED unloading service- so the receiver didn't have to pay benefits & insurance for the additional employees. It's all a $$$ game. Usually, they would give the driver the option of doing the work- which I took them up on most of the time. With as much driving as I did, I otherwise didn't have the opportunity for much exercise besides that. But, there came a time that I was getting too old to do that anymore. Now I work in the oilfield where I let the cargo pump on the truck do the work.
