I just bought a couple of Joby Beamo Cold Shoe adapters. They slide into a hot shoe and have a 1/4 inch thread hole through them. You can attach them to your hot shoe, screw in your tripod mounting plate and attach your camera right way up to your inverted centre column.

Nice video James and a great solution for the clear sky problem (something I know a bit about). My old tripod had a centre column that could be angled at 90 degrees that would allow very low shooting. My new one has a completely removable centre column that allows for a very low POV but I haven't used that feature yet. Great final image with lovely texture in the water. Thanks for sharing
@JamesBrewphoto5 жыл бұрын
Cheers Ralph! Yeah you will be a master at dealing with those sort of skies. I find them very tough indeed, I'd take rainy grey days over them to be honest. Appreciate your thoughts :-)

Have not seen many people use the reverse tripod method so well done for giving us something unusual to try. Not sure I would be that happy with my camera being so close to the water though. I have been to that place recently and got my tripod covered in sand. Nightmare. Loved your image and how you crafted it. Great vlog, as always. 👍

Thanks very much Chris! Yeah shooting over water like that gets the heart pumping a little bit haha. I think I would have cried had it gone wrong lol
@paulm81575 жыл бұрын
👍 Beautiful outcome, James. Impressive water images. Your fancy was clearly well tickled. Clouds would have detracted, in my opinion. Tripod yoga - new one.😁🧘♀️ I’ve used the method for some macro shots, when maneuver space is limited, but prefer “splayed legs” method. I take it that your tripod legs don’t do the flat out thing. Although viewfinder/lcd image would not be upside down, the displayed cam settings don’t invert. Correct? I imagine this would be an excellent situation for a smartphone based remote cam control app with live view - no need to “stand on one’s head” per above comments.
@JamesBrewphoto5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul. The tripod legs do splay out but the centre column means it's very difficult to get properly low. The inverted method allows me to basically shoot all the way to ground level. Shooting upside down was hard but live view did spin round thankfully. So no need to shoot from the handstand position 😂😂
@paulm81575 жыл бұрын
James Brew Were cam settings also inverted, James?
@JamesBrewphoto5 жыл бұрын
@@paulm8157 The buttons were obviously all upside down but the screen did flip round in live view which did make things a little easier. Still a bit fiddly though

I heard you say D850 and a jolt of joy ran through me. You dont know how happy I am to see people use DX format cameras. I truly want to grab myself a full frame. But, budget constraints just won't let me.
@JamesBrewphoto5 жыл бұрын
The D850 is an FX camera - sorry to burst your bubble 😬
@speedways15 жыл бұрын
Well done, but I have the same question. In the video you show the image on the back of the screen. The image is proper but your camera is upside down. I use D850's also and there is no way, that I know of, to flip the monitor upside down to get this view. How did you do it?
@JamesBrewphoto5 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Steve. I assume you are referring to the b roll around 6 mins in? When I turn my camera upside down it shows the displayed image correctly for me via live view but the hud of menu options are upside down. I assumed this was just standard for the camera. If yours doesn't do that it must be a menu option somewhere in the bowls of the camera controlling that (no idea where :-S)
@speedways15 жыл бұрын
I assumed it was LV so I’ll need to investigate the menu settings, thx
@speedways15 жыл бұрын
@@JamesBrewphoto The D850 in LV knows it's upside down, in regards to the image, so it automatically flips the image, but the info remains upside down. Unlike using the eyepiece. Simple as that, nothing to tick or untick in the menus.

Yes the one that comes out onto white beach. I took a shot of it many years ago but not recently. Probably one to revisit
@mattwoodproperty5 жыл бұрын
James Brew definitely mate, man of your calibre got scope for several shot options, cottage, fauna, headland, rocks, fishing baskets. There is also a shack made from driftwood another 100mtrs south, if you look at a satellite image, it’s the zigzag path that leads to it, maybe that might make an interesting compo

It can be hard without any cloud cover but you did a decent job getting a photograph. I dont know why camera bodys are missing kensington lock slots it makes so much sense to have one. You can use them to deter thief or as security when upside down. 👍

How did you invert the video? This would have come upside down?

Just flip footage in Adobe Premier Pro
@paulmcwilliams86415 жыл бұрын
I take a lot of low level macro shots of mushrooms, stacked and 3D. I tried the upside down technique you used, but it mas a massive faff using the controls. To improve things I initially made a square frame out of some flash brackets for use on my inverted tripod, which worked, but was lump to carry around. I now just use a flat twin flash bracket (Like this one from Amazon UK B07CVWF35T) and screw the centre 1/4 UNC thread on to the inverted tripod thread then mount the camera right side up on to the right side flash bracket. I use my 2nd body to counterbalance the camera I am using, but it would be easy to make something to hold a few rocks, or some earth etc instead. It also means you can get the camera even closer to the ground. Hope this makes sense.

The other way of a low shot is to use a short centre tube. Some are available on the bay. The centre tube is usually to long as standard, not allowing the photographer even with the legs open wide to get close to the ground. Macro extension arms come with a short tube and long tube.
@JamesBrewphoto5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that would work and is a good option for people where the column is maybe not reversable. Nice tip Derek 👍
