I always imagined weight. They know how much comes in, and how much should go out after smelting. Or I've even imagined they weigh employees as they come and go... They're likely paid well enough to not want to lose their jobs, and be condemned to never work again from tainting their record. Of course gold is shiny, but I really came here for the thumbnail booba. The idea that we, as a species, should continue to mine or gather gold is baffling. As a species we have enough of this substance just sitting in warehouses (like Fort Knox, or the Federal Reserve, or Bank of England) to last our manufacturing facilities probably over a thousand years into the future. Gold is a metal, not unlike iron, copper, and aluminum... to have so much unneeded product just piling up in buildings would make one think, because of marginal utility, that it's almost worthless in reality. The 'value' of gold is a perplexing fantasy.
