They asked someone in the film, and he said he wasn't comfortable discussing it. They also asked the owners of the paintings, whose letter of reply is in the film. They won't discuss it either.

This is interesting but rather old. It seems that some of these ‘fakes’ have now been researched and the experts have decided they’re not fakes.

48:19 the statement of that lady is so on point. And to add to that statement is that the very art establishment that once spat on Van Gogh's paintings, who thought of him as an imbecile for painting such naive paintings, have now made him into a demigod of the art world. Where were they when Van Gogh went to sleep hungry? When he cried alone and forgotten in his room. Too late for a dead man to care now.

Contrary to the closing speakers comments, Vincent himself predicted that his works would someday fetch over 100,000 francs. Of course back then, that was just a small fraction of what they actually realize today, but he was prescient enough and educated enough to know the truth.

That closing speaker makes a sufficiently stupid remark in calling Vincent van Gogh a "simple man." She's a fine example of the slipshod charade that the pantheon of "experts" often proves itself to be.

Theo was so devastated by the death of Vincent that he himself passed away a few months later. They were buried next to one another. Now that is brotherly love!

Sorry to smear the romantic aura but In fact the documentary makes 3 big mistakes: 1. Theo died of syphilis, he was already very sick; no need to romanticize it; 2. Vincent cut his ear to give to a prostitute not for Gauguin, he even tried to git the ear to her, the fight with Gauguin could have triggered it but it was not to blackmail him at all as it is stated; and 3 (this one is heavily disputed) Vincent didn't commit suicide but probably was shot by boys in a prank that was gone wrong, he in fact said to not to blame the boys: who would kill himself with a gun in a way that it would take days to die? almost 2 days. But as everything about van Gogh there are a lot of things that can't be fully understood. All those facts are fairly documented, for a documentary that make so bold claims they should have told Vincent van Gogh story more precisely, this weakens a good claim about the non authenticity of the paintings ("if they can't even do the biography right how can they question the authenticity?").

Is not the first time that Christies selling fake artworks... they just care about money and laughing to people who buy forgery pieces, just simple like this, beside that each artists has specific brush strokes and not difficult to recognize the fake one for a specialist.i love him specially his specific color values and brush strokes.

To verify a painting properly can take months, how an auction house can explain to an owner desperate to sell a painting that they will take 4 months to do a proper study of the provenance and tests? Besides if this incredbly expensive procedure discovers that the painting is a fake who would pay for it?

as an artist, isn't there a chance that the "fake" sunflowers is just an early draft and Vincent hated it so much he never signed it or mentioned it? What artist DOESNT have drafts that have never seen the light of day? lmao
@annnee6818

That is a very distinct possibility I would say. It's of course also possible it's a fake. I'm ten minutes in and up to now it's ALL waffle, nothing intelligible... They say stuff like "that's not how Vincent worked". Aha. Why?! "He mentions sunflowers 27 times but not THOSE sunflowers!" Uh huh. How do you figure?!! They don't explain their reasoning in a way that's interesting for a documentary they're just filming rants. I hope this improves or I'm gonna switch it off.

Or even an study made by Shuffenecker for the restoration he did as a rehersal? It could be a legitimate copy made by legitimate reasons, not a forgery intentionally. But I am willing for your theory a bad painting that he did again, why not? Vincent describe=s several things he didn't like about some painting on his letters to Theo. Absence of mention is not evidence for forgery. In fact nowadays the authenticity of those paintings is not in question anymore, but that fact that some of them were robbed from Jews by the Nazi and sold again after the war.

If you're watching, narrator, please stop trying to sound like the Queen of England. I studied (the origins of) English Language at Uni. That accent has no roots whatsoever. It just suddenly appeared a couple of hundred years ago. It was quite literally invented by some royals to make them sound more distinguished than everyone else. All of the other UK accents can be traced back to things like Old Norse, French and Latin. But not RP. So please, stop trying to sound like the Queen. I can assure you, you are impressing nobody.

So he only cut off a bit of the lobe of the ear? It’s always been said that he cut off his ear - big difference there The art world is very confusing , perhaps deliberately. I’d have thought that if people wouldn’t give access to ‘certain’ documents, there’s something in there that they want, or need, to hide. Thank you I wonder if it was his emotional state that gave his paintings their appeal. Must admit, never been a fan of his work. Maybe seeing the movie when I was young turned me off 🤣🤣🤣🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺

I thought the same about the ear until I read more about it many years ago. Facts sometimes or often get simplified by certain people and if it spreads enough then this eventually becomes "the" truth. I guess this is just another example of "fake news".

I recently watched a documentary i think was by BBC which was all about that. In the process they found a written evidence from the Dr who treated vangogh for his ear. He even drew sketch of his ear in a letter to a friend. Which proves that he actually cut all his ears off and only a bit of the lobe was hanging!

Vincent van Gogh - vingt cents = 20x100 = 2000 ... Gog and Magog - I presume Gog refers to Jesus, Jezus in Dutch => 2000, van Je zus ... Je zus is Isabella van Castilië, the second child of Isabella van Aragon-Castilië, who established the Alhambra -> Al Hombre -> human ... I got the key, but that's not enough, I'm just a storyteller ... my life is in between the life of Johanna Van Castilië (Jeanne d' Arc) and Sophia Quinze (15) ... When I am laid in Earth, may my wrongs create no trouble in thy heart ... it was a complete surprise for me, too, but this time, we don't have hundreds of years to consider, this is the time that everything is about to change and not for the worse, but for the better!

I'd like to know what Waldemar's take on this would be. I'm certain he'd have a mouthful to share with all the experts. Anyway, I've always been against great works of art being sold to "private" collectors. Art should belong to the world or at the very least to the country where it was created. I'm glad that the Japanese adore him so much, that's great. But, in a way I hope it is a forgery. The Japanese don't like their national treasures being kept out of Japan by "private" collectors. If you have an authentic blade by a famous sword-smith of the classic era, and you send it to Japan to have it sharpened or put into display condition, they will take it and replace it with a lesser blade and send the "copy" back to you and keep the treasure in Japan. All national treasures of Japan stay in Japan. As for the West's mentality, it's all just about the money. If you're rich and foolish enough to purchase something like that, you deserve everything you get. The works of William Shakespeare are everywhere for everyone to enjoy. So why shouldn't't art be the same, Vincent's or anyone else's. When he was alive, they wouldn't give him the time of day. Now, they suck him dry for all they can get.
