I'm turning 40 this week with no retirement. I made a conscious decision to sign up for a Robinhood account on Sunday. I put in $350 to start on the long haul. I'm not a day trader but I am a patient man. There was a time between '12 and '13 where I had $18k in savings and another $11k in a retirement fund from a previous job. I didn't invest like I should've but you know what? I'm done feeling sorry for myself. I turned a page and started fresh. I figure I have a good 30 more years until retirement time and I had to start somewhere. Wish me luck!

First of all good luck! I have some good advice that I hope would help you retire comfortably. I really appreciate that you are patient and I can guarantee that will pay off in the future. I also recommend reading the book intelligent investor and then if your done or cant finish it i would watch the video “takeaways from the intelligent investor” by Swedish investor I also recommend the video interpreting financial statements by the same creator this will give you som great ideas about value investing and how to spot a perfect company, minimise your loses while maximising your profits and overall use give great advice. And again I wish you luck!

Cashed out and Semi retired at 31. Took a year off. Traveled. Came home and started working part time for the insurance, entertainment and pocket change. Work isn't work when you don't have to work. I was approaching 30 odd stocks/ETFs. Trying to do a value strategy, I felt like I was missing out on various sectors and regions with my stock purchases, so at the start of the year, I sold all of my individual stocks and went fully to an ETF strategy. I have some duplication because I discovered Schwab commission free ETFs before Vanguard and now don't want to incur high capital gains, so my portfolio is SCHB & VTI (for total US stock market), SCHC, SCHE, SCHF, VEU and VSS (for my international investing), SCHA and VBR (for my small stock investing) and VNQ (for REITs). I have two mutual funds in my 401-K that I try to augment (by lowering the expense ratios and diversifying the holdings) with the aforementioned ETFs. One of my mutual funds is a growth fund and with the success of growth companies recently, I feel my portfolio needs more large value, so I've added VTV, Vanguard's Value ETF.

How many stocks is half the real question. When you plan to buy a new stock you should be comfortable in having at least 1.5-2% of the portfolio value in that stock. If not you should not bother starting a new position! Diversification does not help if you have 1 or two shares of a company just to say you own it.

(Almost) Everything taught in a general primary- and highschool is useful I think, including basic biology and basic math (and i would argue chemistry and physics too), even if it serves just to make kids realize those fields of knowledge exist. But I think you mean that it is left completely to kids and their parents themselves to learn how to do taxes and I agree with you. Basic financials should DEFINITELY be taught in school. Part of me thinks that it isn''t taught in school because in a way, teaching an entire generation of kids to save money and be financially literate isn't actually that good for the economy, since most money is earned from people spending thousands on gadgets, clothes, coffees, unpaid debts, interests, etc.
@VioletIsBulletproof4 жыл бұрын
@@samuellambertmurrayduncan1412 naaa. Trust me, even with knowledge most people cant help but by stuff. Hell my own roomie who lives with frugal little ole me - who happens to talk about finance to an unhealthy degree lol- still goes to starbucks or eating out or buying nice things occasionally. They like having good/yummy things. Its that simple. Knowledge without practice is pointless...and most people dont practice, or dont practice it as much (finding their own middle ground). What's your top 20?
@clarkroberts56034 жыл бұрын
I own between 20-35 usually, I have probably a hundred or so really strong or interesting companies i keep an eye in the event that Mr. Market gets irrational and this typically grows as i sift through that huge list of crap companies you have mentioned. My core aim is A) Is the company making money and is it in an industry that is something i understand and has a future, B) Debt load/ how cheaply is it trading relative to its earning capability and assets, and C) Div? and how stable is that Div. I'd say that 2/3rds of it pays a Div and my yield is between 5 and 8%. I am in probably 8 or 9 sectors, banking/credit, energy, auto, tech, consumer staples, steel/mining, real estate, insurance/investment services(could probably be lumped in with banking). No expert but i can read a balance sheet and try and find a good deal, I've always liked yard sales and never thought they'd be training for investment but it seems that along with gardening, which is another useful skill set for an investor, I must thank my grandmother for the majority of my investing skills. Along with a handful of wonderful books by great investors, humble and forward looking to be sure. Great video as always, doing a service to the public.

@TudorSicaru4 жыл бұрын
@@Abcccdwe please explain..it makes sense for leveraged ETFs to decay because of compounding losses. But I can't see any way for a regular ETF to decay, except for the management fees that I'd gladly pay (0.05% or so, if you pick the right ETF). It's the price you pay for not being Warren Buffet :) Is there some decaying factor that I'm missing?

Howard Marks is my favorite investor, and his thing about the market is how to manage risk. I lost close to $900 4 years ago trading options (I had no idea what i was doing). Now I started a dividend portfolio with this strategy to minimize risk holding 60 stocks including ETFs. So far its going great I started in January 2020 and got $0.16 that month in div. Now as of the end of June I receieved $27.48 effectively paying for my electricity bill which is around $25.

Being new to investing, I can understand diversifying by choosing stocks from several different companies within different sectors, but how do you determine how much of each company's stock to purchase? I wouldn't think you just choose say, 20 companies and buy 1 share each. Is there a general rule on something like this? I dig your videos, btw. I've already learned a lot. Keep up the awesomeness!

This is why I like fraction shares on robinhood, I can spread and gain income to make my dividend growth higher every year, and reinvest it back to other company’s that are doin well, even if they doin bad, I still buy, cuz increasing the dividends yearly it helps you buy more company’s that pay great dividends in return. Plus with fraction shares you can buy high priced stocks that pay dividends. I learn a lot from your videos and others on KZbin, we create our own index. 10% of every company that pays back helps create a better future by starting now

Chain link has seen one of the strongest rebounds from its recent lows across the aggregated altcoin market, with its price ticketing higher as investors begin rotating capital into"risk-on" assets as Bitcoin and Ethereum show sign of strength. Now's a very good time to build a strong portfolio because cryptos are generally bullish and gaining momentum and there's no time for DCA because the price of crypto-asset will explode to the moon sooner then we think.
