As someone who invested in video games over 30 years this advice about flipping is 100% correct. However the secret is to keep a cash flow, flip to the flippers and don't hold on waiting for the right buyer. The key is to move it as fast as possible to get your capital back. When investing in VGs only buy when they are as low as you feel they can get. Then buy in volume....but you have to be prepared to sit on them for 10+ years. Of course you can add value through grading.

Great discussion. I like longer term holding. My problem w flipping short term is you often pay sales tax 5-7% and buyers premium 3-15% Could often pay 20% in fees on sales Then you pay 15-20% in fees and shipping on the sellers side Then collectibles tax is about 28%. You really need to have 100% or higher profit to cover all those fees taxes etc and have enough margin for a sizable profit. Note it is nice that stocks and bitcoin have minimal transactional fees like fractions of a % then long term cap gains taxes are just 0-20% depending on your bracket.

This is why I sold all my Lorcana 1st Chapter boxes for £250 each. Before finding this channel I'd definitely have held them. Take the easy wins, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. I'm very aware that I got lucky with that one though. Going after a new TCG like that was pure gambling and I could've been hit in the face with a stale doughnut! Thankfully I didn't buy the subsequent sets! 😬😅 Edit: Should add I've also bought things that did eff all. Don't want to be that guy that only talks about his wins. 😂🙈
@zachexum42033 ай бұрын
Congratulations, but not every product will be a short term winner unfortunately, and those first chapter boxes are already back in the 250 range. Who’s to say they won’t be 500 in 2 years. Edit This practice reminds me of a quote about the stock market on how one of peoples biggest mistakes when investing into individual stocks is adding to losing and not adding to winners. Way I see it is don’t sell something too soon that has been performing well unless you need the money. A lot of people did this with team up, evolving skies, and the likes and are kicking themselves. Easier said than done though I guess.

I actually didn't get in initially. I bought it when the reprint sent it down to about £100 a box and then recently sold when it hit £250. Interesting take, I don’t disagree with flipping as an optimal strategy. Having said that there is still a limit to how much capital you need for shorter term flips, so I’d rather tie up my surplus “collectible” money in long term investments like sealed Pokémon, while I flip the less desirable items and try to speculate on the mid-high tier graded that I hold long term. I graded and flipped a ton of 151 psa 10’s and those “just” spiked like crazy (still held onto a large amount fortunately) So there is always a combination of having an eye for value long term and opportunity cost which does cut both ways.

It's not really a secret anymore. Everyone's all about buying low and selling high, but that's causing a lot of products to spike in value. If you take a longer look, though, many of these items might end up being worthless as the population ages. Just think about Atari 2600 games-are people still betting on those, or are most of the original gamers fading away, shrinking the collector market? I can see gaming heading down a similar path unless games are designed to last forever and companies keep re-releasing them like they did with VHS and DVD/Blu-ray. Eventually, interest will dwindle as younger folks lean more towards digital downloads. We're on borrowed time until many of the older gamers pass on, leaving a smaller group that can actually afford those pricey titles. What do you think?
