Our Rich Journey - Investment Accounts Needed for Financial Independence | FIRE in Less Than 10 Years: After reaching FIRE (financial independence retire early), we both quit our jobs, retired, and moved our family of four to Lisbon, Portugal. We reached FIRE before 40 and in less than ten years, but in doing so, we had to be strategic about the investment accounts we invested in and the order in which we invested in them. By being strategic about our investments, we were able to reach FIRE in less than ten years. In this video, we discuss the specific accounts that we invested in and the order that we invested in those accounts to reach financial independence. We detail the accounts that we fully invested in first, second, third, and so on and we share why the specific order that we choose was crucial to our financial independence journey. Thanks for watching!

You guys made the MOST educational video ever for asset allocation! Thank you so much! I have a question of pension since you mentioned that before: after early retirement, is it better to take a lump sum from your employer or just leave it until you reach the minimum retirement age to get the pension? My employer give a match to our pension contribution but not the 401K. Thank you all!
@OurRichJourney

Thank you so much for watching our videos. Regarding your question, it depends on the pension. We left our pension with our employee because the lifetime pension payments starting at 59.5 years old (we can take the deferred option) was more valuable than the lump sum payment. In most cases its better to leave the pension and take it deferred.

I’ve got 4 so far just by watching you guys 👌🏾 guys who’s haircut 💇‍♂️ looks fly 😆 Aman 💯 patiently waiting on the HSA video. Instead of a 529 I opened an Able account for my special needs son and it is tax deferred. The information on the HSA would be good for me since he has a lot of medical necessities.

That early retirement account is really important when dealing with FIRE. Can an HSA be used abroad on qualifying medical expenses? I know you guys are in Portugal

The only thing I did differently was put more than 18 months of rent and food expenses in CDs first, and have 6 months of the same expenses in a high yield savings account, so I can sleep knowing I am covered for more than a year if anything were to happen like losing a job, at the same time I did the 401k company match, HSA company match, and I just opened a Roth IRA with VTSAX when the market plunged maxing for 2019 and 2020. This was a SUPER informative video, I'll look into maxing the HSA before my 401k like you said although I am worried about possible layoffs at my job. I make less than $40,000 a year and live very frugally so if it wasn't for my on-hand savings I'd be worried about bills. Thank you for all the amazing content, I'm learning so much!

Glad I found you guys!! My question that I can't seem to answer is how to prioritize these accounts if you want to retire early, but don't earn enough to max them all out and contribute to a brokerage account? Basically when you retire and start doing a Roth Conversion ladder how do you pay for that first five years before you can withdraw that first conversion with only tax advantaged/deferred accounts?

So when investing to employer match, example if there's is 4%, you would invest 4% also right? (equal's 8%)
@phillips8366
@phillips8366 3 жыл бұрын
This is different from employer to employer, but I think they meant they received a 5% match up to 100% of the possible contribution. (They put $20k in 401k account, US gov, their employers, put $4k in).

You want to have both a ira and a Roth IRA because you can lower your taxes meaning you can get yourself into the lowest income tax bracket by taking the money first out of the ira until you reach the end of the 15 percent tax bracket then take the rest from your Roth because Roth's are tax free since you payed it already
