I’m here in 2020 after seeing a clip on Chamath on CNBC. We’re currently in quarantine due to the CoVid-19 pandemic and I’m obsessed with his story. I’ve been watching any video I can about his struggle and success. So refreshing to hear an intelligent speaker who found such success in life

He gloats a lot but deservedly so. Personally, I’m following this guy into the night bc I think he’s onto something with his thesis. It’s obvious he does have his biases as we all do; but if you can dissect what he says from the psychology of how this dude thinks, you can really understand the mind of a what is now, billionaire. He was recommending the CEO of a multi national corporation to buy a billion dollar company at age 27. Most of us can’t even get our bosses to agree to leave 15 min early on a Friday.

Since then I have started to look for his earlier interviews and become a bit of a fan of the guy. He is fairly smarter and more intelligent than most of the people. And he has a visionary view of the business and future developments, so it really matters to check his opinion when placing the investments into the stocks.

I like how he cleverly rewrites his story about the Srilankan ethnic conflict. The majority Buddhist Sinhalese population through constitutional decree denied the minority Hindu Tamil ppl their constitutional rights to live in Srilanka. Hence the Tamils fought, first thru civil dialogue and when it failed, later with militancy with support from the Tamil diaspora in India and around the world wherever Srilankans lived. The uprising was eventually put down with funding and arms supply of $1 billion given as loans by the Chinese in exchange for leasing their ports to China (debt-trap diplomacy). Millions of Tamils were ethnically cleansed from Northern Srilanka with the international community not intervening on the massacres. The real refugees were the minority Tamils and not the majority Sinhalese.

Obviously brilliant and successful. Incredibly articulate about his ideas, as well. Then combine that with immigrant drive and experience ‘hustling.’ I love the humbleness too of his statement that, “it is easy to conflate success with luck” and how he credits his mentor. Funny that he has to make clear that decision making in business is often done with the gut and should actually be done with data and fact. Seems so simple, almost obvious/trite, but it isn’t. It reminds me of how powerfully Elon takes complex issues back to fundamental principles. Break the issue down and then grind on it. Also, like Elon, who was not content with his PayPal riches, he decided that wealth is not enough, and wants to change the world. However, on disruption…I read The Innovator’s Dilemma and it all seemed so true to me. I still do believe in the power of disruption, but it has gained a cult-like status in the valley. Particularly the book but also the idea need to be taken with a grain of salt. Here’s a good critique: www.newyorker.com/magazine/2014/06/23/the-disruption-machine Peace!
