@@everettlethem6747 Yeah, but he is talking about using information on ancient naval warfare on a medieval-themed book, which is something completely different. And as a scientist, you always learn to look for the primary source. You don't know, where this guy got his informations from, for all you can know, I might be just based on theories, rather than evidence or even be invented for entertainment. To look which information is reliable is one of the most important features of science :)

Worth to note that the so called 40, named Tessarakonteres, was used as a prestige vessel, not utilized in war. It's likely that this 130 m. long ship was even a catamaran. Likely a combination of two 20s linked together with a large board in the middle. So it might have had oars on the inside between the two hulls. Since the number of rowers on each oar typically didn't go more than 8, and since each file of this ship would be 40 rowers. Dividing 40 onto 3 sets of oars wouldn't work. So dividing it between 6 oars for a double hull, makes more sense as it would be less than 8 rowers per oar. This ship was apparently so massive that it was difficult to actually maneuver. This seem to have been the thing for large ships in general, as it's also reported to be the case with a 300 m. long Louchuan tower ship form China, which was hard to maneuver in strong winds. But one ship in particular stands out from this. A warship called Leontophoros. This vessel was a 110 m. long "eight" (Octoreme) with a single oar per file, with 8 rowers per oar. There was 100 files on each side, meaning it had in total 1600 rowers. Leontophoros was, unlike other ships of similar size, actually used in battle. Although if it was efficient or not I am unsure about. Modern thoughts about the ship makes it seem to be rather inefficient overall, due to the share size of the vessel. Regardless of it all, it turns out to have been an experiment that was not repeated.

I wonder if anyone back then would have had the for-sight to cast bronze into riveted panels into the shape of a hull against a super structure, then water tighten it , removing the necessity for a wooden hull. I don't think a single hull could be cast in one a pour method because the production of bronze casts is a very difficult business in its self . Mounting greek fire turrets, and ballistas on and in through-out the ship, would have made the vessel a formidable foe .

Brilliant video. I have further questions. How important were the sails to these fleets, were the oars mainly for manoeuvring the ships during battle? Will you be doing Empire Fleet Anatomy? Is it pure coincidence that Oakley released this just after that video by CA on the naval clash at end of the First Punic War?
@InvictaHistory8 жыл бұрын
So the sails only really provided secondary power for ships and would have been used as fleets moved from place to place. In battle the sails would not have been used as they were more of an incumberance and it seems that they might even have been removed for battle in some cases. The oars on the other hand were critical for both movement and manuevering. A good captain might actually use his ship to shear off enemy oars and disable the enemy... I'll cover this more in the next video. As for the Imperial Roman Navy, that will probably be a future series I explore. The reason for this particular video was because CA asked if I could do something for them and the Ashmoleon exhibit.
