A history documentary on the Forgotten Wars - The Nubian Invasion of Egypt! The first 100 people to go to www.blinkist.c... are going to get unlimited access for 1 week to try it out. You’ll also get 25% off if you want the full membership.
In this history documentary we explore the tale of King Piye as recorded by his victory stela around the year 720 BC. He hailed from the Nubian civilization which had long been entwined with the history of Egypt. In fact its lands had recently been ruled by the northern power during the New Kingdom of Egypt. Upon its collapse though, the people of Nubia were in a prime position to take up the mantle of rulership.
We begin by setting the stage with an explanation for why the New Kingdom of Egypt fell into decline and what factions rose up from its ashes during the Third Intermediate Period. Around 730 BC, the status quo in the region would be upset by Tefnakht, the prince of Sais, who formed a coalition that would begin to devour his neighbors. Frantic reports were sent to Nubia saying that the princes of the Nile Delta were as dogs to his heels whilst the whole North had opened its doors to him. Hearing this, King Piye of Nubia was not frightened, instead he laughed with a joyous heart. Now was the moment he had been waiting for. An opportunity to lead a glorious campaigns with the Army of Nubia.
We follow the saga of his adventures featuring numerous battle and sieges that would ultimately culminate with his dominion over all of Egypt. King Piye now became the first black pharaoh of both Upper and Lower Egypt, founding the official 25th dynasty in the process that would reign for almost a century.

Hey Invicta, I have to say I love this video bro. As a person who reads up on Ancient Nubian/Kushite history, you did a great job. The only correction I have is when you stated in the beginning that Piye was the first black pharaoh of lower & upper Egypt. No, Piye was the first Nubian king of lower and upper Egypt. There was African Egyptian pharaohs before him. Besides that bro, y'all are doing amazing job with these videos. Keep up the awesome work.

Tefnakht did not submit to Piye in person, but by a letter instead. Piye didn't push the matter any further and returned to his homeland, never to come north again. Tefnakht continued to rule parts of the delta until his death. He was succeed by Bakenranef who ruled for about 5 years. He may have tried what Tefnakht did (rally the princes of the delta and march south), but the Kushites now under Piye's successor, Shebitqo put a stop to it by have Bakenranef set on fire while he was alive. Egypt was once again under the control of a single man.

@ايجون تارجاريين That sounds about right. Its not economically feasible to conquer everywhere directly. What it does mean is that cosmopolitan Nubian culture was heavily Egyptianized but not rural Nubian culture. So once Nubia back into their mainstream politics became politically independent they rather quickly reasserted elements of their native culture.

Nubian rulers & priestesses didn’t simply preserve Egyptian religion when starting the initial take over. What is talked of less, is Nubian religion which pre-dates Egyptian influence on Nubia. Religious Influence between Nubia & Egypt was a two way street. When Nubians did use Egyptian religion, they integrated their own Kushite goddesses & gods into it. The Nubians even when using Egyptian deities, often contextualized & saw said Egyptian deities differently than Egypt proper.

@@Wolf-jg9nb I didn’t deny that Egypt conquered Nubia. And then Nubia conquered Egypt. That did happen. What I was saying, is that both had contact & influence with one another before such back & forth conquests occurred. Nubian didn’t simply absorb Egyptian religion or culture, Nubians had religion & culture before being influenced by Egypt & the influence that Egypt had on Nubia wasn’t a one-way-street. Nubia also religiously & culturally influenced Egypt as well, & contextualized certain Egyptian deities differently than Egypt proper. Amesemi & Apedemak we’re unique to Nubia (they had allot of lion goddesses & gods, more than Egypt it seems). Some Egyptian deities were in fact of Nubian origin, one of them perhaps being Menhit.

Hey great job invicta. The Aksumite Empire is another great ancient African civilization you could do a video on. It was the Askumites who defeated the Nubians, when thr Nubians became weak and thus became the new super power in that region. At the height of their power, they was considered one of the greatest Empires of that time period and they also have a written language. Here's just a small quote about the history of the Askumites: "Aksum also enlarged its territory through warfare. Led by King Ezana I, Aksumites conquered the city-state of Meroe/Nubia (part of present-day Sudan/) in the early fourth century C.E. In the sixth century, the Aksumite King Kaleb sent a force across the Red Sea to subdue the Yemenites, subjugating them as vassals for several decades. The Roman emperor at Byzantium supported Aksum in this venture, largely in retaliation for Yemen’s persecution of Christians."

Nubians were ancient kemetians, those pyramids built in Sudan were not only built for the “Nubian elite” they were built by the native population that remained to honour their ancestors that lived and ruled in kemet for thousands of years. These guys were still practicing the ancient religion till 300AD whilst “Egypt” was occupied by foreigners. The last indigenous ancient kemet pharaoh nectanebo ii returned to upper Egypt and then Nubia . When Alexander the Great conquered Egypt he created a narrative that he was a descendant of nectanebo. the Nubia of the ancient times was not an ethnic marker, but a region bounded by the first and sixth cataracts of the river Iteru (Nile). The name of a non-Egyptian kingdom south of Nubia is “Kush". 5 out of the forty-two traditional administrative divisions of ancient kemet were located in ancient Nubia, and that part of Nubia was not considered as part of Kush. Kush conquered lower Egypt at the end of the old kingdom however the ancient Kemetians recaptured it from kush during the new kingdom ( after 700 years)The oldest state in the Nile valley is ta-seti which lies on the borders of lower Nubia and upper Egypt.. and the oldest most dominant cultures in kemet were the naqada and Badarians. Located in upper Egypt lower Nubia. The heart land of ancient kemet was upper Egypt and now these people are called “Nubians” due to modern racial standards ridiculous.

Because its like the forgotten southern underdog to Egypt. Egypt is WORTHY of praise by all means, but seeing more African civilizations be covered by relatively big history channels, especially since African history seems to be among the most overlooked by those outside the continent (minus Egypt), really warms my own non-African heart. Nubia is badass, they simply are.

I'd argue that Narmer was the first black pharaoh of Upper and Lower Egypt. Nubia was always the source of Egypt's wealth, including gold, especially gold. Why would anyone believe that the old kingdom would unite Nile civilizations and not include Nubia. It was Nubian resources that financed the Old Kingdom. Why would anyone believe that that people from all over the ancient world came to Egypt prior to the 25th dynasty but Nubians, who only had to travel downstream to get there, never made the journey?

3:44 Kind of odd that you used the much later Hellenic/Greek versions of the names of the cities, that is if the names in Egyptian are available. Thebes is the Hellenic name, while the Egyptians called it Waset. I know that the Hellenic versions are those that will probably show up first when you reasearch about them, but it would be nice if the original Egyptian names are used since the time period is 720 BC, before the Hellenic influence in the area. And I also noticed "Arabia Felix" in Arabia, again maybe that is the only known name of the region in antiquity but, you get it

I'd hesitate to call Piye the "first Black Pharaoh of Upper and Lower Egypt" like in the introduction of this video. He had no concept of being "Black," that's a completely modern concept; he was just a Kushite, and probably would have found it strange to learn that people thousands of years after his death would be grouping him with completely distinct peoples based on a handful of features. And, on the flip side of that, the borders between Egypt and its neighbors weren't solid, and there were probably plenty of people with more distant Nubian or other Sub Saharan ancestry in Egypt, who would be considered "Black" today, but wouldn't have been distinguished in their own time since our understanding of race was so far away. We can't say for certain that no previous Pharaoh would be classified as "Black" if we saw him today, because unlike a Nubian-born Pharaoh like Piye, a thoroughly Egyptianized person of more distant Sub Saharan descent most likely wouldn't have been distinguished from other Egyptians.
