The cost for the CVA-01 rose to unbearable heights. That is why the Invincible class was chosen. Also you need to remember that this was during the middle of the Cold War and that the Royal Navy's purpose was transitioning from a expeditionary force, to a largely anti-submarine force.

It was designed to serve that purpose. The Kiev class were and are (technically "is" powerful, since there is only one in service) powerful. However the two classes of ships-although both are classified as aircraft carrying cruisers- were designed with two completely different roles in mind. The two are basically comparable only relatively to what they were meant to do.

These ships were designed as Through deck cruisers to defeat Soviet subs in the cold war, never as Fleet carriers however thats a role they now undertake and do so very successfully, they are the most successful carriers in the world after their US big brothers, making a mokery of much larger French and Russian carriers in the numbers of deployed sorties, roll on the QE class!

The invincible class were a costly mistake for the RN,and the harrier was quickly out dated.

The harrier was never gonna be a world beater but it served well as a ground support plane for many countries. Also the invincibles were a nessecityafter the CVA program fell through. And they did well

We are talking about two now three big aircraft carrier. Stop the production of the third. Instead make two invincible type aircraft carrier. Put attack helicopters Chinooks helicopters 1000 royal marines commando Scimitar light recon tank 20 Scorpions light recon tank 20 Warrior APC 20 Saracens APC better than Landover snatch vehicles 20. For all platforms add 2 missles and 2 mini guns and a gpmg machine gun.
