Can full grown adults use these? Or would it require splitting the bone in the roof of the mouth first to enable the proper pallet expansion?

Really good question ... You've probably read that the best ages to do expansion are in kids as young as 7 years old up to 12-14 years old. I have seen expansion work in 20-30 year olds with gaps opening between the 2 front teeth which means sutural expansion. If I was an adult, I would try the expansion and see what happens meaning it's non-surgical; no operating room needed. If it doesn't work out, then you will need to reverse and wear the trays backwards to get back to where you were. Make sure you are being monitored by an orthodontist. Teeth can be moved in 1 direction and back in the other direction, but it needs to be done carefully. If you're willing to take a chance, go for it! If you don't want to take a chance, then SARPE is the tried and true method, but that's surgery. Good luck!

My daughter just got her expander in on the top jaw. It's a permanent one and we go back in 6 weeks for the dentist to expand it. She got it last Wednesday. It's hurting her not in severe way but she doesn't like it. She's 8. Since we can't go to the dentist over the weekend I am curious if this new expander can be an option for her?

Great question! It sounds like she has a non-turning expander without a screw. There are some expanders that the orthodontist can activate 1 or 2 times and it expands without a key. There are pros and cons of these types of expanders though. I personally like to be in control with the amount of expansion and I do virtual expander checkups every 2 weeks. As far as the Invisalign expander goes, it does sound like it would work great for your 8 year old. The Invisalign expander is a new treatment appliance so not every dental professional is ready to use it for their patients. Wishing your 8 year old all the best on her orthodontic treatment!

Great question! The first step is to see an orthodontist to be evaluated for palatal expansion. If you need it, then you might have a removable (Invisalign Palatal Expander) and non-removable (traditional slim expander) options presented. Good luck!
