Every so often I come back to this video. It never gets old. It's one of the coolest acts on this show. And nothing beats the looks on everyone's faces from the judges to the audience. Bewilderment, anticipation, fear it's all there on their faces, and as someone auditioning you couldn't ask for a better response. Especially to something unique as this is.

Magician's wire and electromagnets. The chalk is probably not just regular chalk, and is being held to the board by an electromagnet. Most likely the stick of chalk contains some metal in it somewhere. Then an apparatus on the back of the chalkboard could house an electromagnet and a motor to drag the chalk around kind of like an etch-a-sketch, before turning off and dropping the chalk. And if you notice a tiny little piece DID break off the tip, exactly as expected if it were in fact just a little piece of chalk attached to a prop. And magician's wire is just a classic solution for moving objects around a stage, especially a lightweight cart on wheels. The chair turning could also be done using magician's wire, although I suppose it could be motorized and remote controlled, wire seems more likely to me. Now if they'd flipped that chalkboard around so we could see the back side, and it turns out to be completely ordinary, THAT would be a neat trick.

Alicia was the first one to give it away this is BGT scripted "magic." She anticipates the popping of the balloon and covers her ears before it happens. That reminds me of the extra kid sitting at a table in the airport restaurant in North by Northwest, the Hitchcock movie and covering his ears knowing the gun was gone go off during that scene. Then Amanda knows to put the chalk on the table the "right" way for the "trick," which is an unusual position.

No, HE didn't. The producers of the show did. All the shots of the audiecne are shot before the performances. With no idea who or what they are supposed to be reacting to. Someone come out and says "OK, now I need you all to pretend you have seen something REALLY mysterious and a little spooky...and....go!" they don't even really try to hide it anymore. I mean, didn't you ever stop and wonder how they just HAPPEN to have the camera and microphone on various audience members just as they are saying something witty or appropriate for the act? A few hundred people in the audience and they focus in on one member RIGHT as they are saying things. Complete with a microphone that is definitely NOT a shotgun mic that can pick things up from far away. I don't know if it is lie that on BGT but on America's Got Talent, it is so blatant that they have REUSED crowd reaction shots for different acts. Very obviously so. And sometimes, the judges are wearing different clothes from one angle of an act than from other angles of the same act. And another time when there was a home schooled kid singing about how he gets no women because he is homeschooled, the main camera shot of the judges had a normal crowd right behind them. A random mix of men and women, you and old, etc. But when the time was just right, they cut to a shot of the crowd behind the judges and it was all young women swooning over him! And then seconds later, back to the wider shot, and lo and behold, it is that same random mix of people.

We used the curtains and a hiydrolic to move the car a bit. Our dancers danced to the song 'Thriller' and smoke was use for effects and the audience had a blast.

I think I'd love it, if the "invisible magician" were in fact the crewmember who carried the box. Cause the crewmembers can usually be everywhere without being noticed. The magician was speaking backstage, there was string attached to the trolley, the balloon had an air tube that filled it with air as time was passing by causing it to eventually pop, the board was magnetised, as for the dummy thing well, either Amanda was told to say dummy or the box Alesha put her hand in was filled with dummies, all of different textures and shapes, to make each one feel different.

Loved the story telling. Of course, it does help to suspend your belief and just enjoy the show since the more cynical of us can probably take some guesses as to how some of the things were done. But have to admit the part for the chalkboard was definitely a delight to watch unfold. Well done by the phantom.

@@rubinmike-litt1068 Yea they cleverly cut at each time where the chalk would have to float to a position for a new letter. There's no way that was unintentional. That chalk was either on a wire and moved to a new position (which would just look silly), or someone just walked up and moved it, between cuts. Also the buzzer going off. That could easily be achieved by having some technician press a button on cue. Overall a creative way to use technology (and some audience/crew participation) for a magic show. Sadly I could not watch it myself without immediately thinking of whatever technology was used to make everything happen. :P

Magnet on the back of the board with 2 strengths, chalk has an "inner" chalk with a metal cap restrained by spring/elastic. First setting on the magnet is enough to hold the "chalk" onto the board and move it, second setting pulls the real chalk forward to write. Allows you to move and write at will.

@@thorveim1174 almost certainly done with a strong magnet on the back of the board. Whether the magician was back there doing it by hand or rigged up an automatic writing machine is up in the air. Generally, with magic, the answer is very frequently the easiest and seemingly stupidest explanation - just done in such a way as to make you think it certainly wouldn't be the answer.

In fact, this was the most motorized routine i've ever seen. You know, magic is expensive, but preparing the Tools is the most time you spend in. Well, at least the Dolby Audio was strangeld down to stereo, but in a nice way. The Producers now how to mix! Liked that!
